    Hey tacomaniacs,
Recently had the combo trac control and check engine light issue. Turns out it was the evap solenoid unit. Not bad for 98k. Easy peazy, had a local shop do the work. Fast forward 6months. Now when I get down to a 1/3 of a tank, the pair of lights comes on. Run her down to E and refill. Drive 50or so clicks and low and behold the lights go out. Fishing for wisdom...

I would recommend checking what the fault code(s) are to start.

Sounds like the solenoid again... was it an OEM part, or after-market?

Well honestly it was a non factory warranty repair. Bought it used. Sounds like an aftermarket FAIL. I didn't get the codes but will check on the ticket and see if they listed them. Get back to you Joeyv141 and Geeves77

The most common reasons for those lights is a loose or bad gas cap.

Often making sure the cap is seated properly (or replacing if needed) and clearing the codes will do the trick.

Not saying that's your issue. Just something to keep in mind.

Yeah I would go back to whatever shop replaced the evap solenoid and they should look at it, possibly under warranty depending on what they find.

Those guys sucked and had my truck for a week. I would rather do it myself. I have a better mechanic who is a personal friend. Couple of cold ones and a little guidance is all I should need.

If the old invoice has the fault codes from then it would be nice to know if the same exact codes have returned or if something new is also present, also on the invoice see if they replaced only the solenoid or the whole charcoal canister. I just dealt with a 2012 4Runner and the vac pump, vent solenoid, pressure sensor were all part of the charcoal canister. Can your or your friends scan tool command on/off the separate EVAP solenoids? if so you can test them and see which dont work then tap on them while commanding on to see if they will knock loose, also check the wiring for damage. Some of the members here have access to the wiring diagrams and they can hopefully post the related ones but the more info you can supply the better.

I'm assuming you mean P0441 and P0456 as there is no 446 code on 2nd gens
Those 2 codes together usually means there is a leak in the system or there is a problem with the leak detection pump being able to pull a vacuum on the system.

A good video explaining how the system works.

So in conclusion I powered each device and found that the solenoid was stuck in The shut position. Will stick to factory parts or Denso parts when I can get them. Thanks for the help and community.
