my replacement truck arrived today. still unsure what the problem was. got to see my original tacoma and had a bunch of engine parts on the rear seats so they must of been doing a lot of work to try and figure out the problem. sales guy said it might be the same problems as the lexus is250 with the carbon build up. unsure how accurate that info was since it came from a sales guy and not the mechanic.

Thanks for the response. I'm at the dealership, 5 hrs no solution. Is the thermostat housing easy fix? Maybe I should tell them?

THIS is why I am admittedly a proud Toyota "Fanboy" If this were one of the few Corvette C7s that lunched an engine, GM would have replaced the engine instead of offering a new car. Toyota fixed my blown head gaskets free and initiated a recall for such when they noticed bad gasket material for a handful of 6 cyl back in the day, I had 80K on the six year old truck, A friend had 120K and they replaced his as well.

I will buy Hondas and Toyotas going forward (except for my MX 5 that replaced a Corvette and worse than awful GM service).

Great dealer service. Doubt that repurchase is coming from Toyota.

Toyota doesn't seem to be helping the folks with piston slap in the gen2's.

I can only represent my own experience with Toyota over the past 30 years with early models and gen 2s and it has been excellent. Others will have their own version of Toyota's commitment to quality and quest for satisfied customers.

At my old work we had a couple 2000 GMC Savana vans. One just crapped out and didn't start so we took it to a local Chevy dealer. I get a call a few days later, there's a list of items that it needs and the issue. A week later I came to pick it up and went to pay my bill which amounted to $0. Not bad for a vehicle that was out of warranty for 8 years and is used commercially. I'm not a fanboy of any brand, I am a fan of being treated fairly and honestly.

And it was the Toyota dealer who lied to my face and said my Toyota Tundra needed mass amounts of work to clear up a check engine light issue when all it had wrong was pinched wires.

I have been treated better by the GM dealers than Toyota. Go figure. Fanboyism.....

I have CEL (P0598) and Trac Off as well on the first day. Been to the dealer twice now. First time they said cleared the computer and should be OK (after 8hrs of waiting). Took it back again, now they told me it will take 4-5 days for thermostat assembly part to come in and must keep the vehicle there unless I want to sign a waiver for taking it the way it is due to vehicle safety not working. Opened a case with Toyota, they told me if problem is resolved, I am entitled to an 8yr/125k platinum warranty for free.

It crossed my mind, only thing is a 7172 (dclb2wd) in BBP is no where to be found. I waited 2 months for it. I slept it over and decided to give them 1 more chance before pulling the trigger.

Once you can not return it its yours with all the problems. I would not waste my time. This is not like you bought Ferrari and had to wait couple years for custom build.

Spoke with the case manager and the dealership, they are not exchanging trucks because it is not a safety concern for lemon law. Only way to get it replaced would be if it is not fixed with the thermostat assembly coming in. I'm hoping that everything gets resolved once the part comes in so i can finally enjoy driving my truck. The free 8yr/125k warranty is a nice resolution i guess for now.

Its your call, as you can see a lot of people having the same problem, Toyota may or may not fix it, in the meantime they are disassembling your vehicle. Dealer is telling you things to make you go away. If I were you I would just grab lawyer since dealer sounds like a hole.
You would be surprised how quickly they improve when they get letter.

P0598 is just a thermostat code right? Were there any other codes? If that's it and your truck never overheated I doubt any damage was done, though you can never be 100% sure, and that 8 year warranty for from from Toyota itself is worth a good chunk of change.

    Which one?

The OP's truck was likely misfiring or having a timing issue. That is not the same issue as your truck. A timing issue can quickly escalate to major engine work. Toyota gave him a new one because they couldn't pinpoint the issue and it was in their best interest to find out what went wrong on OP's truck, so they pulled it apart and gave OP a new truck.

Both your issue and OP's issue can cause limp modes, but they are not directly related. This is not a straight cause and effect thing. You can have many many different things cause a truck to enter limp mode. The effect is always the same, a loss of power an inability to accelerate, but the cause can vary drastically.

On your truck it sounds like a specific code was triggered that means there is a voltage fault (low voltage) coming from the electronic thermostat. If that is the case then I'm guessing a tech was told to do some quick line continuity checks to eliminate a short as the problem and then replace the thermostat if a short was eliminated from being the possible issue. If the thermostat doesn't work it's an ECU issue and that's fixable without a new truck as well.

Your dealer did not tear your block apart on your engine unless Toyota told them to and I can't see any reason why Toyota would tell them to do that over replacing an electronic thermostat. Trust me, they don't go pulling engines unless they have to. I doubt Toyota said, "Hey, so pull the whole motor apart to see if the thermostat is broken." On OP's truck they reached a point where the head would likely of had to come out or the engine itself would have to come out so Toyota dictated replacement at that point to find out what went wrong on one of their new flagship products.

Quite honestly, your truck probably had a faulty electronic thermostat from day one. It's possible it was damaged in transit or during unloading at the dealer.

Don't let BlueT wind you up. I'm sure he means well but he has zero, or possibly negative, faith in Toyota and is not a good person to be listening to if your truck has any hiccups. He will have you convinced it will light on fire if the brakes squeal :p. I agree with BlueT that if you are in a return period, meaning legally you can return the truck, why not do so because then you get a new truck :D. However, if you are outside of that period, it sounds like the dealer and Toyota are doing everything reasonable to help you by fulfilling their warranty obligations.

Thanks for the education, dealer called me they were able to get the part today by some miracle. I do believe they really are trying their best. We'll see what happens, supposed to be done in the next few hours and I will report back.

Well it turned out the thermostat assembly fixed it as ausietek2000 stated. Full car detailed, full tank of gas, 8yr/125k platinum warranty, my thoughts have changed towards Toyota and the dealer. Everything worked out, thank God
