Same issue just happened to me this morning. CEL and Trac Off. My Bluetooth wouldn't connect either, and an "Check Charging System" (the battery icon) popped up.

I almost made it to 1k miles.

The dealer said it was the charcoal filter. The fuel system needs to stay vacuum sealed so the fuel vapors are not released while the car is off. Apparently, the charcoal filter was the reason for a leak in the system. So they replaced the charcoal filter. It was a quick fix (took a little less than two days).

I asked if this was common, the service manager stated it was a problem with all new Toyota models not just the Tacoma's. I am assuming the failure rate in these filters Toyota uses are not high enough to completely trash the stock they have, but sill a common problem.

I know there are completely separate threads about the trans fluid being low, but my Tacoma does have a lag when shifted into gear. So I told them to check the trans fluid (they said they checked) and it was fine. They couldn't replicate what I described, but it's still there.

This just happened to me today as well. CEL and TRAC OFF light, but the car still drives fine. Checked the gas cap already. Taking it to the dealer on Tuesday the 5th.

I have a 2016 tacoma sr5. I have just over 9,000 miles and the same thing happened to mine. I had it towed to Toyota yesterday. I'm still waiting to hear back from them.

2016 TRD Sport DCSB M/T. Just over 7000 miles. Same lights came on for me last night and I'm sitting at the service department right now waiting to hear the diagnosis. Didn't check what error codes were in. CEL is locked in and TRAC Off light comes on at a stop but goes out when I accelerate above ~15-20 mph. I did notice that if I turned the VSC off, the TRAC off light went out but the CEL stayed locked in.

Got home, pulled this code. Kind of jives with the other account of having the charcoal canister replaced.

Turns out a mouse had nibbled trough a wire under my intake plenum/manifold. Just one little red wire to cause all that nonsense. Toyota part numbers for the really small connectors/pins (1.5mm) are as follows: Connector 90980-12353 and the individual pins are 82998-25250.

I'm showing you what caused my check engine light/trac light to come on. I then gave you a solution to fix it, if the same situation were to happen to you, with part #'s even.

That's all real nice, and thanx...Great advice man... but where is this connector.. that was what I was referring to..? It is not very clear in the pic. You said under the intake plenum...I assume that would be on the right side of the motor..? Sorry, did not mean to upset you, but I clearly do not know where this connector is located...
Hopefully it won't matter to me anyway..! Just trying to understand..
    Peace Bro..!

Had the same thing happen yesterday - 8K miles. The code was inconclusive (according to the dealer) and might have been related to an injector. However, it was listed as a 'past failure' or something like that so he won't tear into anything. Seems to be running fine now. I'm about to go pick it up. I just saw this thread so I didn't know anything about the carbon filter. If it happens again....I'll look into it.

Good thing is that while in the shop he cleared it for the rear differential. ;-)

Otherwise, truck has been great. Tranny has smoothed out and running in the mountains I just use 'S' to keep it out of overdrive. Problem solved. It could have a bit more power but I'm not doing any racing with it.

Only thing I'm surprised by is the shitty gas mileage. Freeway driving at 80 gives me 16-18 mpg - usually on the low end. I have a canopy, roof rack, and nerf bars. None of that is helpful I'm sure. Around town 13-15 mpg. If I'm lolling around the countryside at 50-60 mph - I get 20+ mpg.

Your MPG seems bad man.... I'd check the tranny fluid and start using D instead of S on the HWY.

I get 26 +- CDN MPG on the hwy and about 19-20 around town.

Yep. I'm pretty surprised at the mileage. 80mph REALLY knocks it down. I was carrying a hitch bike rack and was doing about 15mpg over the mountain pass.

And, I'm not in the throttle all the time either. Not sure that low tranny fluid would make that much of a difference in mpgs.

For what it's worth, my 2017 Tacoma manual trans just did this due to the truck thinking the clutch was depressed. Had really poor power, CEL - Traction Light was on and was in limp mode.
Turned out to be a bad relay when the remote starter was installed therefore the truck 'thought' the clutch was depressed. He changed the $0.99 relay and wha-la! issue solved from what he said (I pick it up tonight). Just thought I would post if someone comes across the same issue.
