Check engine light and Trac Off Light

Hello all,

I have a 2019 2.7 Tacoma w/45k miles. Cranked it up this evening and the check engine light is on and a little while later the Trac off light joined it, so both are on now. Can't turn traction on using button. Will take it to dealer, but what could this be?

Trac light accompanies the check engine light. It’ll have to be scanned for codes before anyone can help you without totally guessing.

 

Look to see if you have rodent damage in the engine wire harness. It's pretty common.

 

There's over 200 possible codes that can turn the check engine light on so take your pick, Trac Off light will always accompany the Check Engine light on Toyota.

Make sure your gas cap is on tight, beyond that without the code(s) it's anyones guess.

 

Does the Trac Off light intermittently go off and back on?

 

Going to get it scanned. Trac light stays on.

 

Most auto parts stores will scan it for free. Most common code is P0456, which could be as simple as a new gas cap.

As I drive it intermittently does go on and off.

 

When I was trying to find a locking gas cap that would not throw a CEL light, that was the symptoms I had. Check Engine light would be solid lit and Trac Off light would go on and off intermittently. Once my gas cap was sealing it took a couple of trips for the CEL light to reset or I could clear it with my scan tool.

 

If you do need a new gas cap (locking or non-locking), be aware some gas caps do not seal properly. Check out post #61 on this link. My locking gas cap looks like the one on the left. No CEL light in 8 years. I make sure it clicks 3 times after each fill up.

I was on the way to get it scanned and stopped for gas. Put cap back on and light went out. Going to get OEM from dealer. Thanks for your help. Have a great day!!!
