I have been having problems with my Tacoma stopping. Specifically, when I come to a full stop, if I don’t let off of the breaks as I’m stopping, one or both of the back tires lock up and the truck skids to a stop. Shortly after noticing it, the check engine light came on and when I scanned it, it said it was the ABS. I didn’t look at it for long (in hindsight I should have got the code number before wiping it). Now I’m driving and it almost seems worse after wiping the code, but the light hasn’t come back on. It should have shown an abs light but it showed check engine instead. I’m at a loss and don’t know where to start, if it helps, my Dif locker also won’t engage.

    any ideas?

A check engine light for the abs? Mil light is for emission/engine related issues. The abs light is for brake related issue.

Am I reading your issue correct. You have’s check engine light for an abs issue but no code? So no abs light?

It was indeed a check engine light and when I read the code it said it was the ABS. No ABS light ever.

I’m guessing my options are replacing the sensors, and tearing apart the wiring harness until I find a bad connection

Well, I goes there a first for everything. I wouldn’t throw money at it, you need to figure out what code it is. IDK how sophisticated or detailed it will be but I would try to find an abs compatible scanner as regular scanner cannot pull abs code. IIRC, you jump pin 4 & 13 with a clip and count the flash. The flash indicates the number which will direct you to the possible issue.

Depending on your car, you might have 4 abs sensor. Changing parts in hope out will fix your issue will be a waste of money.

Ok as I've been messing with it, that abs code could be unrelated and the issue could be axle wrap due to worn leave springs. I've come to this conclusion after driving it for the whole day with the same issue and no more lights on the dash. My leaf springs are perfectly FLAT under zero load. Would that contribute to my issue of skidding at the end of my stops? It happens especially when I am coming to a stop after being over 25mph and if I brake a normal amount without trying to feather it at the end, it will skid and feels like it coming from the back

I wonder if the springs are so flat its triggering the load sensing valve into thinking there is a heavy load when there is none. Biasing the brake pressure towards the rear with no additional weight makes sense it would lock up the tires.

I don't know why this would generate a code though...

Here's a free and easy test you can perform: remove one of the two ABS fuses (either one doesnt matter which, both are located in the main fuse box under the hood).

Expect an ABS light to come on (ignore it). Then go drive the truck, and if your issue is resolved then it was indeed ABS causing the issue. If the issue persists still, then start looking into mechanical causes.

Does your abs light come on with key in accessory? Just making sure you don't have a burnt bulb.
