Check engine light from gas cap?

    I just got a check engine light a day after a gas cap notification. Should I just unplug battery and try and reset or bring it to dealer which is an hour away? A malfunction of the electronic control of the engine, throttle, or automatic transmission has been detected

    My suggestion would be go to AutoZone, Reillys’s, or another parts store. Most of these guys can scan and clear any codes. The gas cap deal often kicks on a emissions code.

    Order one of those cheap OBD2 readers from Amazon and download a free app to read the codes. Important tool to have unless you want to be at the mercy of a mechanic

    What do you mean by "gas cap notification"? If you have a bad gas cap causing all of this, replace it and the CEL should clear itself with a bit of driving.

    There ya go. I forgot to put the cap on one time after filling up... CEL came on.... Put the cap back on and about 20 miles later CEL went out.

    I have not had a CEL light in 8 years of using a locking gas cap. When I was searching for a cap that would not throw a CEL, seems to me I had a solid CEL light with an intermittent Trac Off light.

    CURT Mfg front receiver, anti-theft cages around cats
    I installed a NAPA locking cap on my brand new 2023, and got the emission check codes.
    They cheerfully refunded my money, and the shop where I do business cleared the check codes.

    They have not come back after going back to the stock (non-locking) gas cap.
    My SR does not have a locking fuel door, which is why I wanted the locking cap.
