I recently bought a 1999 tacoma v6 (3.4l) 4x4. I bought it from a random used car dealer. as part of the deal i Talked the dealer into putting in a new timing belt. I flew to okc to pick the truck up and drove in back to kc. On the way the check engine light came on. When I got it home I hooked it up to a code reader and it indicated multiple misfires. I replaced plugs wires and coil packs (all oem parts). I gapped all plugs properly. The check engine light still comes on, but turns off after about ten minutes of driving on the highway. The truck will noticably misfire once, then the light turns off. I hooked it back up to the computer and it came back with no codes. I restarted the truck, drove for a few minutes and the light was back on - code indicated misfire in cylinder two. After driving for a while again, the truck will miss once and then the light will turn off again. this pattern repeats everytime i restart the truck. Hope this makes sense. Any ideas?

I might investigate the cam sensor and crank position sensor. Any information as to whether there is good compression?
Good luck and welcome to TacomaWorld! :)

Is it possible that whoever dicked with the timing belt slipped a notch (threw off the timing)

I will check into both of those. They may well have done a poor job on the timing belt, but would that create a misfire that is constant and not one that comes and goes? Certainly not doubting you, just trying to wrap my brain around it.

It could be your injectors. Or if it's been ran hot. Could be a blown head gasket.

I ran some checks and found nothing out of the ordinary. Broke down and payed toyota their $59 to run diagnostics. Came back as bad fuel injectors. have run a fuel injector clean through it and it didn't bet any better. I am gonna go ahead and pull and rebuild/clean the injectors. Can't hurt for $20 and my time. I'll repost in a couple of weeks once it is done and tell how it went.
