The code numbers. Not what they told you the interpretation of the numbers were...........

AFAIK a scanner test drive and monitor doesn't replicate x keystarts, or other things that create pending codes vs displayed codes.

So. If you believe the water in the gas story, get some gas dry at the parts store and toss it in the tank. Along with a top up of fuel from another location. Code should not return once you clear it this time. (DIY by battery ground removal if you don't have a scan tool)

The code was for cat converter, we've seen this code before for people with a bad CPS. Why the love for loose gas cap? Even the most clueless tech would know to check the gas cap.

Doesn't CPS failure cause the truck to not run? If there is a check engine light, but the trucks running fine, then not the CPS I would think. Or have there been cases of the CPS going out and the truck running fine?

Yes, just thinking he's got some sort of issue with the CPS as the gas cap is easily checked and the water in gas explanation seems BS.

Converter codes would be po420 or p0430. Stop at an auto parts store and have them see what code in in it for shits and giggles. Gas cap would be p0456,455,440

Thanks, I'll do that. The dealer didn't put the codes on my receipt.

Modern gas pumps do an excellent job of keeping water out of the system. Sounds like the tech was being lazy.

not too good of a job. Tech next to me just had to drain a tank in a van. 1/2 the tank was water.

For sure... It's possible the CPS is starting to go. Water in the gas has a probability of about zero %. :) (Well, I guess it's possible.)

I'd start by trying a different gas cap. I bought the locking one at Walmart and it's working so far. Not a bad cheap mod anyway.

If the dealer thought the gas was the issue. What did they do to resolve the issue besides resetting the check engine light?

They told him to run the gas out and see if the light comes back on.
    Lazy tech.

Exactly. Lazy tech. Give the customer truck back after telling him he has bad gas knowing that it could do damage to the truck.
Reasons like this is why I always use top tier gas.

Was the customer paying to drain the tank and flush fuel system? It's not a warranty concern

OP didn't say if they offered to do that. But I think that they should have at least offered him the opportunity and tell him the risks of not having it drained.
