I have a 97 Tacoma 2.4. The check engine light comes on and causes it to bog down and then will go off and I will regain power. When idling the light is off. I've tried 4 scanners and none would give us a code. It sat at a repair shop for 7 weeks. I finally had to go get it and it ran perfect for 3 weeks and just now it started doing the same thing. Any ideas?

Get a reader that will read it. Many don’t. Scangauge will read it if you want to fork out the dough. There are cheaper options that will read it but I don’t know which. Sounds like possible misfire?

So we changed the exhaust manifold and the problem went away for 9 months. 3 months ago it came back and lasted 10 days. Then ran fine for 3 more months. It's now started doing it again. I finally got the code scanner to give me a code and it gave me P0340 and P1300. During a cold start it runs great. Once it warms up and start going down the road it comes and goes. The light will go on and off and the truck will buck and jump. Just horrible fuel economy. Can watch the gauge go down. I just don't know. It will run fine after disconnecting the battery for a few miles and then boom it comes back and on and off. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Those codes are for the camshaft position sensor, and an igniter malfunction... so I'd start there.

Camshaft sensor should be straight forward enough.

Igniter malfunction- If your truck has EFI get new Denso or NGK coil packs.

It's probably time to swap plugs, wires, and injectors if you haven't done that.

It has a distributor. No coil packs. The wires, plugs, were all changed. The other thing is that when my scan tool is hooked up, once the check engine light comes on it no longer can communicate. Once it goes off it can communicate again..

    IMO
The p1300 is the result of the p0340 throwing an incorrect signal

Where is the camshaft sensor? Do you replace the whole distributor? I'm almost certain there is a short somewhere but I cannot find it. It's just too intermittent. I feel like if it was a bad sensor or part it would always have issues. Instead of going several days or months with no problems running great to messing up every day and back and forth.

That's the crankshaft shaft sensor. Not the camshaft

If you have coil packs or coil overs this is where your cam sensor is....

right inbetween injectors 2 and 3.....in the actual head

Kinda pia to get to.......inside the intake manifold cave.....
