No, it's just better more efficient engines that run a lot cleaner than in years past. Unless your operating in a severe duty situation 10k oil changes are fine. It's full synthetic oil, not the dino oil of the old days.

If you are worried about it, you can send the oil to blackstone and get it checked. Oils are MUCH better today than they were in the past. As well as engines being more efficient like mentioned above. Even on an older car, a good synthetic will go 8k no problem.

I would rather change it myself, costs me less than $20 and I know it's done correctly

Changed mine in my buddies garage last week. Rotated and torqued the tires and was topping off the oil in amount of time it took him grab lunch and walk back out to see what was up.

ToyotaCare is a bigger risk than reward.

I don't get why it's so difficult for so many people. It's the cleanest oil change system I've ever used. Honda GM etc. Granted I haven't used newer stuff tho. (new Hyundai seems like it's sorted out nice. )

Don't be sorry. Under the skid plate. Between cross member and radiator support.

Understandably a lot of harsh criticism of dealerships, but some are really great.

I'd blame management more in this situation. Dude probably had a flow for such a simple job and got disrupted. I know I've been pulled away from jobs and know how it can fuck things up.

in my personal experience, the people changing the oil are 2 IQ points shy of being retarded. that's any dealership in my opinion. One time, they, NISSAN, did some warranty work on my almost new 2007 xterra and they checked all my fluids as a courtesy. Well, the next time the rear diff needed attention, meaning a fluid change, I could not get the fill plug off easily. I used my torque wrench to see how tight it was to take off, 80 some ft lbs on a plug that calls for 36 ft lbs. I previously had changed the fluid myself, using a torque wrench to tighten up things, before they checked it, as a courtesy. No thanks. i don't need dealership induced problems and will turn my own wrenches on maintenance stuff until i physically am unable to then i will just pray. Fast forward to my experience last night with my dealer who sold me my 2019 taco. The parts guy told me that the plastic housing will break unless you use their dealer-only tool to take off. And they cannot sell the tool. Trying to scare me into using them. And my sales lady looked at me like i had 10 heads like the anti-christ when i told her i would not be having them do my 2 years of "free" oil changes. LOL.

I had this happen once, they went as far as to not change the oil either... nice hey. I checked when I got home, still dark and dirty.

Lazy kids working in the oil change lane.

I hear ya. Last time I had mine in for the free oil change they said I needed to replace my cabin filter. I had just replaced it a month or two before that! Liars.

going in the wayback machine, in about 2011, i took my 2007 xterra to a dealership for the spark plug change. it's a complicated task as you need to remove intake manifold etc etc. SO they said , $182. I said let's do it! So they took it and 10 minutes after leaving the dealership in the rental- as it's a 3 hour job per the FSM- the srvc writer calls stating "Mr Xyz, your transmission fluid is black and needs a flush".. How much? $200 something. I had just did a drain and fill a month prior and had done one yearly the previous 3 years, so i know it wasn't black. She also said he was almost done with the plugs. Remember, it's a 3 hour job per the book and 30 minutes had passed. I smelled a rat. I turned around and got to dealer and asked them to show me my black trans fluid. They walked me back and the tech was asked to show me and he said it looks fine for a vehicle that's only had drains and fills. It was red but not perfectly clear and a tint of brown- normal on that truck. at that point i didn't trust anything they said and asked them to show me how they did the hard plug- the one buried under the intake manifold. To my surprise the dude used swivels/extensions and showed me the plug as he pulled it back out. Seems you don't have to pull the manifold off for that afterall. Anyhow, i apologized to the tech and the manager wanted me to apologize to the writer, which i did NOT. She misled me trying to make an upsell. I never went back there again.

If you ask, yes they will skip your 5k and let you do the 10k at 5k, but many are not aware the first scheduled maintainence does not include an oil change.
