A friend of mine and I torqued the u-bolts on our tacos today - friend's: TRDOR DCSB Auto (built 3/16); mine: TRDSport DCSB 6M/T. Nearly all of his bolts needed a quarter to a half turn to reach the "proper" torque. My bolts (mine was a San Antonio build) were essentially torqued as they should be from the factory. Maybe toyota is catching on???

While I simply put a calibrated torque wrench on the U-bolts as the rest of you did, when I trained at Ford they did tell us to do this much differently:

"If you are concerned about the torque on a certain fastener, the recommended practice is to loosen it, and then torque it using a constant steady pull until you reach the required torque."

When I recheck them at 5k I will loosen them and then retorque to the correct value....

    YMMV

All I can say brother is I was in your boat. For 4 weeks I considered selling it or trading it. Guess what. Nothing I like better than these trucks. After Toyota finally fixed most of my issues-one is awaiting parts-I am happy as a fart and actually proud to be an owner again. I sold an excellent 10k mile 14 F150 and a low 60k mileage 08 Taco to buy my 16. For a little while I thought I made a huge mistake. Now I feel pretty good about that decision. Be patient. Utilize Toyota Corporate and hopefully you will get past this. I know how tough it is but I feel good now. I did have a very rough June with my truck.

All these issues such as low grease in a zerk which may not be the case, a bolt on a u bracket, a tsb tranny update and maybe a squeaky spring which probably will be fixed ? If you had a volkswagon or a civic with missing c clips in the engine what would you say ? This is minor dude.

I agree but when it's your truck it does suck. I had all those issues and more. It was a buildup of 6 months of issues. Like you said, as long as they fix it, it's all good, and then you can say maybe it was minor. Mine got so bad I parked for it 11 days because I was too embarrassed to drive the noisy thing. Gave me and Toyota a black eye. Now it is water under the bridge. Plus amen for the TSB which completely changed my trucks performance.

I'm at 9k miles with a few off-road trips on the new truck, so I checked the u-bolts. All nuts took 45-90 degrees to reach 52 ft-lbs on a Craftsman click type torque wrench. I would not have considered any of the nuts loose, but they did turn reaching full torque.

Just checked mine. Same as HalfWay. I think this is normal relaxation and is why certain items should be checked at certain intervals.

Are you sure? They have to be checked at the correct temperature.

When i took in my truck for the TSB, i noted that for them to check them and grease em up. The report says they did.. its too hot outside to go crawling under my truck, so ill take their word for it.

Just a tip, if you tell them you're seeking legal counsel, they will stop talking to you almost immediately. It will really ruffle their feathers.

Are you saying it's listed differently in two locations or are you talking about the way Toyota writes torque specs, which is metric with alternates in brackets? For example the 2nd gen FSM says the u-bolts should be 50 (510, 37) and the units are N·m (kgf·cm, ft·lbf).

I torqued my new ones to 37 ft-lb with anti-seize but will probably bump them after reading this thread since that does seem low. I usually do 10% under the number Toyota gives because I'm not sure if they assume thread lubricant in their spec or not. The mechanics who did my recall spring assembled everything dry, no grease or anti-seize anywhere. Even 52 ft-lbf seems low but with anti-seize it at least sounds like it's in the ballpark. The 1st gen FSM was 90 ft-lbs.
