I added the 3 AAL from Icon and it said to torque to 120lbs with their u bolts, is that excessive??

I checked mine today and they were all around 32-42 lbs. I saw some ppl say 52 and some say 90 for the stock 3rd gens. I torqued mine to 60 lbs. Should I be good so should I go higher???

Well after researching the torque values of u-bolts I found some specs.
To help determine the diameter of your present u-bolts, please refer to the following chart

    • 11/16 Socket = 7/16 Rod
    • 3/4 Socket = 1/2 Rod
    • 13/16, 7/8 or 21mm Socket = 9/16 Rod
    • 15/16 Socket = 5/8 Rod
    • 1-1/16 or 1-1/8 Socket - 3/4 Rod
    • 1-5/16 Socket = 7/8 Rod
    upload_2018-4-16_17-18-12.jpg

So my bolts are grade 5, unplated 3/4 nut 1/2-20 so I backed it off to 72 ft lbs. I just don't trust the OEM spec since Toyota already screwed that pooch.

Had mine tightened up @600miles. They were also incredibly loose for just having driven off the factory floor.

The rear felt much tighter after torquing.

My guess is that their is some initial break-in? Maybe it is the paint wearing down or something else. I found mine at less the 30ft-lb, but have been fine since. I'm just over 13k now.

I just took mine to 75lbs today. They weren’t even close. Several turns each to get there.

    Thanks for the heads up

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Just saw this thread today about the u-bolts. Checked, and of the 8 on the rear, 5 were loose. Two of them needed almost a full turn to get to 52psi. The others about 1/2 to 3/4 turn. So yes, loose as others mentioned. 2016 TRD Off Road, about 32K miles and about 7,000 miles of that some hardcore off road. Pretty sure the dealers do not check that when doing a service. My last big service was only 4 months ago and included propellor shaft tighten up. So yes, check these yourself. Greased my 5 driveshaft grease fittings at the same time as my last outing required me to power-wash the undercarriage 3 times to get the hardened mud off.

    52psi, hey?

Anyway, something underneath mine rattles like sonovabitch on stretches of pothole-y roads and a decent clack over speed bumps. I downloaded the FSM the other day, I'll look through to be positive of the proper spec, click them off and report back. Really I replied just to bust ppat4's balls a little.
But I do want to know what that damn noise is. It's not gotten worse in 6000mi and best believe I'm not going anywhere near a dealership right now.

If you have a torque wrench, slide under the truck and check yours- its harmless to do so. Let us know how it turns out for you.

I still haven't checked mine but I also haven't driven it since the post above. (Going to have to check and take a ride today just to get out, this is nuts, no pun intended.)

Should the truck be jacked to take the weight off or does that not matter?

I’ve never seen such a long discussion about u-bolt torque lol. I torqued mine to 90ft lbs after lifting my truck. I also torque my lug nuts to 90ft lbs. I hope my truck doesn’t explode now.

Toyota spec is 37 which I figure is a typo and a technical writer transposed the digits. I torqued to 73 and it feels much more reasonable.

My bottom leaf kept moving sideways after I upgraded to a different leaf pack. Torqued mine to about 90 and hasn’t moved yet. Lol. Hope nothing breaks.
