Went to look at a 2010 today. It came from the northeast so I immediately thought to look at the frame. Take a look at the pictures and let me know if any of the rust looks alarming. It was mainly surface, but does any of it look like it needs to be treated so it doesn't cause any issues?image.jpgimage.jpg image.jpg

I'd be concerned. That frame needs to be treated. I already went through a frame replacement on my 03 and it took almost 3 months. My 13 gets treated with fluid film annually and the rust is kept at bay. I would continue looking or get a very good price on that truck.

Is this something that a dealer would need to look at? I'm in Florida where I feel any answer I would get would be "there's no chance of rust here because of salt", Dur. It's not rusting through or anything, just surface at the moment, I just don't know if this is normal or excessive for this year and if purchased it would be handled accordingly by treating the frame with an anti rust protectant.

IMO If that is the worst rust on the truck i would not worry. I had mine replaced, but it was so much worse. Living in Buffalo the salt is dumped on the road regularly during the winter (and yesterday). Treat it with fluid film annually and it will be fine.

The frame and such seems easy to take care of. The control arm rust and driveshaft rust seems to be my more concerning items. I know with a lift the UCAs would be replaced but I don't want to run into an issue with the LCAs or driveshaft. Know what I mean?

If those are your concerns I definitely wouldn't be worrying. My drive shaft is all original, and I have never even thought of worrying about rust on that, the frame was my concern. From what i can see your LCA's look fine. Going by NY standards If it were me I wouldn't hesitate because of a little bit of rust like that. Just my opinion.

I'd pass just based on the fact you are down in Florida and have no reason to settle on a rusty truck from up north no matter how slight the rust is. Unless your just having a difficult time finding a 4x4. I know here in the south it seems PreRunners outnumber 4x4s 10:1.

Yep. Rust is rust is rust and you need to get it all or someday the truck will be ruined. Step one is to use abrasives (wire wheel, media blast, wire brush, etc) to remove all lthe oose rust both inside and outside the frame. Then apply phosphoric acid (liquid or naval jelly) to remove/convert all the remaining rust. Last step is prep and coat with a chassis coating product like POR15, one of the various Eastman products, or a chassis black.

Yeah the frame on my 2010 looks similar to the OP's and I'm not concerned about mine. I was just under my truck the other day and I remarked to myself how good the inside of the frame rails looked.

Of course I'm up in the land where vehicles rust if you look at them funny.

Pass don't settle on a rusty truck. Keep looking and find one you really like with no rust.

I agree, up here it wouldn't bother me but you guys down south should have a much better selection of rust-free trucks.
