How do I check the transmission fluid on my 98 Tacoma, MT 5vzfe. Also, once I've done that, how do I add fluid if need be? I'm completely new to most car things, but i have a feeling my tranny is leaking.

If it's leaking you should be able to see signs of the fluid escaping. Do you see any seeping oil coming from it?

To check the fluid level you need to remove the full plug and check the level by hand. i.e. Stick your finger in the full hole and there should be fluid at the bottom of the fill hole. Make sure you're doing this on level ground.

Truck on level ground. Remove fill plug. Does fluid dribble out? You're fine. Nothing coming out? Put some in there till it does. Plug it back in. Done.

Also, pretty sure you'll need a 24mm socket

Thanks for the reply. Where would the fill plug be located?

    This might help.
Do not remove the drain plug until you make sure the fill plug will come out! Sometimes the previous owner has rounded off the plug or tightened it too much.

It will be the upper of two 24mm bolts that are located on the rear of the transfer case.
