I bought a 2nd gen ;) At the time, it was 7-8 years after the engine/transmission combo entered service in the 4Runner. I knew what I was getting.

Toyota is good in a sense there usually aren't major reliability and durability bombs with first-year vehicles (something the Big Three offerings can't say), but quirks like clunky shift feel can be expected, especially in this case where the shop foreman disagrees with you in regards to the severity of the clunk. For him it was "slight".
Would you prefer a non-PR answer? ;) Something like "This is a shift feel complaint, not affecting safety, functionality, or durability, so it is assigned level 12 priority. Your complaint has been added to the pile at Toyota. Once the pile exceeds xx% of the trucks sold, Toyota will develop an improvement which may or may not be retrofittable..."
Those of us having to deal with frequent traffic jams or hilly terrain unfortunately can't live with the manual. Plus it isn't available in all the configs.

I've been driving my '85. Pig slow is a complement.

I have this issue too in the 4cyl auto but it sometimes doesn't happen. It used to shift hard no matter which gear. Recently it has been shifting buttery smooth and then out of nowhere slams into gear or clunks coming to a stop. I think it may be weather related as we had nice 70s weather then recently it dipped a little.

I got the same run around from my local dealership. They tried to state it was normal but they felt it and if it got any worse to bring it back in. They put "drives normal, no issue found" on the paperwork.

I also got the BS excuse that my config is rare (SR5 DCSB 4x2 4cyl) so they can't find an exact Tacoma around to test drive to see if it is normal.

Sounds all too familiar. I received a call from a "case manager" today giving me the good old run around. He admitted that they've heard of this problem but Toyota doesn't have any fix or recall yet so he said I'll have to live with it until they do. I demanded an extended warranty which he said he would look into and I said I would be reviewing California lemon laws. I had a 2016 SR-5, 4cyl before this TRDOR and it didn't have this problem and my Toyota service has a 2016 Limited and he said he doesn't have this problem with his. I think they're all full of shit and we get screwed.

Nope. Why would he check the fluid level in the tranny? Tire pressure is one of the leading causes of greenhouse gasses and climate change is WAY more important than tranny issues. :jerkoff:

So here's the update. Toyota Case manager called today with their remedy with still no mechanical fix, but a 8 year, 125k extended warranty. Still being told to live with the problem until Toyota decides there's enough complaints to justify a fix or recall.

Be advised anything you accept from them can be considered a form of resolution in court and may negate your lemon law privelages. Contact and attorney in your state and check before accepting anything
