Chestnut Mountain Road begins in Jocassee Gorges State Park in North Carolina. It ends at the NC / SC border where it meets with Muster Ground Rd.

Chestnut Mountain Road is fairly 2wd friendly. After a fair drive it ends and a right turn leads to Auger Hole Trail. This is more 4wd friendly, but may still be done with 2wd with good tires and/or lockers. After crossing the Horse Pasture River the trail become significantly more rough and 4wd is recommended.

At the Horse Pasture River crossing there are a few desirable spots for primitive camping.

OpenStreetMap view of CMR, as well as the Bad Creek/Musterground Rd area from the SC side. (cross-posted in the MGR thread for reference)

Some really nice camp sites at the river. Have been told by rangers that if you kayak or canoe down a bit you can snag some really nice primitive sites. Of course the offroading is fun, too.

Lemme know if you want some company here. I'd be down just about anything. This is a great area.

Some of the SC BS guys were tossing out next weekend. I can probably do a run then, but probably will not camp.

We’re down would probably like to camp just cause it’s a bit of a drive. @ahspurlock we can roll out together since I’ve never been before.

This is a go for me. Gotta check with the North Carolina and South Carolina rangers, maybe see if they can get the gate between NC and SC unlocked. Anyone have friends?

Bad news. I am told that the gate stays closed. I'm still down with running either CMR or Musterground Rd, but it doesn't look like doing them both as a single run will be possible.

:annoyed: I wasn't home for a single weekend in October, I just need one at home... I don't think I'll make it that quick.
