Sorry Rob, I am leaving for NC on Thursday and won't be back until Monday. Are you doing the ECGS bearing while you have them apart?

Idk, should I. I dont really have vibes only when its extremely cold out. Then I have vibes.
I probably should but I n ed to replace these axles soon cause if the boot lets loose I am screwed. Do I need any type of grease before I put these things on.

If you don't have any vibes, I wouldn't worry about it. I didn't use any grease except I put a little on the splines when I put it in the diff. I got a slide hammer and axle but from auto zone with their loan a tool program, but other than that it was pretty straight forward.

Nope, it shouldn't need one if all you're doing is the axles. I didn't even have to pop the ball joint from the spindle, I unbolted the lower part and it swung out enough to get the axle out. I also had the hub off because I replaced that at the same time, so I'm not sure if you can get away with that if you leave the hub on.

I would just buy the puller from autozone. I picked one up to do my ball joints and have used it on a ton of different things, worth the 20 bucks or so. I always slap grease on the splines when assembling the axles, it helps everything pop back together easier. I don't know how the 2nd gens are, but the 1st gens are super easy, it should only take you a couple hours the first time. I would also reboot the factory CV instead of buying one from a parts house. The jobs messy as hell, but the factory toyota CV'S are awesome and it would be a shame to swap one out for a core for some cheap crap at a parts house.

Hub/bearing can stay in spindle. Remove two lower BJ bolts after removing the axle nut and it should swing up far enough.

Nice, it really shouldn't take too long then, I had no idea what I was doing and I did both the hub and spindle in 4 hours. The hardest part for me was getting the cv out of the diff with the slide hammer, I have seen some people pop it out with a pry bar, I would probably try that method if I were to do it again. Are you planning on replacing the oil seals in the diff? They are a huge PITA to get out and back in.

As long as you're careful about damaging them, you should be fine. I replaced mine because I had to to get the bearing out, and my truck had 125k on it, I'm sure it was the original.

So how do I go about not damaging them. I was watching utube vids and it looks pretty easy. Not going to take brake caliper or rotor off either. Do I need a ball joint seperator though

For the seals, you just have to pull it straight out and be careful when sliding the new one in not to damage the edges of the seal. It's really not that bad, just better safe than sorry. You don't need to pull the ball joints either, there are two bolts underneath the ball joint that hold a bracket to the spindle, take those out and the spindle will swing away. It takes a little shimmying of the axle but it will come out.

Thanks for all the info. Hows the baby, Im sure not a baby anymore. Im going to try to push it off as long as I can to get some help but if the boot goes I guess I will attempt it. I will have new axles tomorrow. Maybe I should buy seals from NAPA just in case.

The boots on my first gen (factoru boota actually) have been leaking for 5+yrs now and theres still grease in them. I would not worry too much about pushing it off for a few weeks, its not a major deal. The grease thats in there is like snot mixed with glue thats stuck to evrey surface. I always popped the calipers and rotor off when i changed mine, it makes evreything lighter and easier to move and work around. Its only an extra 2 or 3mins of work.
