    "Puff The Magic Dragon"

I thought this was about some kid who had a protector, a loyal friend that would never abandon him. How they played together and were best of buddies.

Little did I know it was about a lonely guy who used drugs and fantasized all of this.

    "Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer"

I liked this song because it was about how Rudolf was the hero in the end.

But in reality it is about discrimination, rejection (nobody let him play reindeer games), making fun of someone because he is different and using him because of that.

    "The Candy Man Can"

Boy, if anyone can make you happy, it's the candy man. What kid can say no to someone that passes out sweet treats?

Ohh and back then you never wondered why kids have health problems like bad teeth, obesity, hypersensitivity and sugar addictions.

And I won't talk about the creepiness of getting candy from a stranger...

Soooooooooo...what songs of years passed have hidden meanings that totally messed up YOUR childhood memories?

Not a song, but I had one those "wait, what the...aw geez!" moments when I realized that the little piggy that went to market wasn't on a shopping trip.

Not exactly a childhood song BUT.....

When I was younger I loved the song "Enola Gay" by OMD. Then a few years ago I realized what the lyrics actually meant and I wanted to punch those british communist lovers in the face and stab them in the throat.

For the record, what the Enola Gay did was fantastic.

That's what a lot of people try to say, but experts disagree.

Oh lookie what I found. And to think we as children sang this song and played the game.

    Child sacrifice theory

The theory that the song refers to the burying, perhaps alive, of children in the foundations of the bridge was first advanced by Alice Bertha Gomme (later Lady Gomme) in The Traditional Games of England, Scotland and Ireland (1894-8) and perpetuated by the usually sceptical Iona and Peter Opie.[4] This was based around the idea that a bridge would collapse unless the body of a human sacrifice were buried in its foundations. However, there is no archaeological evidence for any human remains in the foundations of London Bridge.[4]
