I can’t see any difference in MPG with the chin strap off. I didn’t like the looks of it.

I keep hearing about people wanting to add cooling on top of the factory tow cooler, and at the same time I'm having a hard time finding threads where people actually cooked their trans (while running the factory tow cooler), lamenting that they wished they had more cooling. :notsure: What gives?

I tow about 4500 lbs of trailer and gear, and even on long 5-6% grades when its 100 degrees outside does my tranny rarely ever get over 230 degrees or so. I think the OEM cooler works fine.

I doubt the dam has any real affect on cooling else you'd see ORs and Pros on the side of the road with their hoods up and steam boiling out. Just not an issue. As to MPG; there's no doubt there is some aerodynamic advantage to the air dam or Toyota (and virtually every truck mfg) wouldn't spend the money to put them on. However I do believe a lot of that has to do with EPA testing under controlled conditions and allows auto companies to proclaim better mpgs. If you do a lot (80%+ of your miles) on highway driving at 60 mph+ I'd expect you might see 1 mpg better mileage. Most people don't do that (anecdotal) so mpg is a none issue dam or no dam. Your foot on the peddle is the real culprit.

I didn't notice that before, but it does look like a tongue sticking out.

I ran six months with the fairing off and I noticed that the truck at highway speeds wanted to drift around the lane more than normal, and maybe got a little less mpg, maybe a 1/2 to 1
Last year I drove about 5000 miles in a two weeks time pulling my camper within it off because I was going off roading out by Moab so I left it at home.
98% of the time I'm on pavement and it only takes five minutes to take it off so I decided to notch the front of it so it fit over my skid plate, and also I hated taking that damn pan off for my oil changes, so when Toyota had 40% off TRD stuff this year I bought myself the skid plate, I don't like how much wheel you see with it off also, looks a little silly to me

I got 18 mpg highway today on the trip, of 40 miles. Just wanted to say that because it made me very happy

I took my chin thingy off. I tried to put it on for a long cross country trip to save a few mpg's but couldn't live with the site of it.

I added a screw in the middle so it won't flutter at highway speeds

There actually is some truth to that - the chin spoiler will warn you if there is a danger of crunching metal on crossover of an obstacle. Since approach and departure angles are often greater than crossover clearance the chin spoiler will give the novice aka noob off-roader a warning that serious parts are at risk of getting crunched should they decide to mount an obstacle and impress their bro’s.

If you show up to the dealership with an aftermarket tranny cooler and a toasted tranny I’m willing to bet they’re not going to touch it under warranty.

If you’re operating within the trucks stated capability and you cook the tranny your warranty will be good to go.
