    Well, i found a chip about half the size of a billboard pin on the hood of my truck the other day, didn't penetrate to the bare metal, only to the primer. The dealership recomended some paint touch up bottles they had for $10. So i tried it, it hides the noticable grey dot on my hood with the same color, but the chip is still visible and I just can't help but stare and gringe at it when i walk by the front of the truck. After my little discovery I am thinking of going to buy a Hood Protector. The problem is I really don't want one of those, but if it's the only way to cover up and protect my Hood, then I have no choice, unless anyone else has a non expensive way to hide it better or get rid of it all together.

    do multiple layers of the touch up paint until its even with the rest of the paint....letting it dry between each coating. then after thats done, use a good polish and wax to blend together and protect.

    Thanks for the tips, but I finished doing all that and it's still pretty noticable, and still can't help but see it and gringe yet again :( I guess I'll go with a Bug Shield to cover it up

    well....if you get a bugshield......do not get the one toyota has....that thing will mess up the edge of the hood. get one by wade or bugflecter2.......one that mounts with 3m tape.

    This stuff works pretty good. If the scratches aren't too deep, you can make them virtually un-noticable. It takes some practice to get it nice. The good thing is, you can do it over and overa again without ruining the oem paint.

    I've used it on our corvette (dark blue)with awesome results. I've also used it on the speedway blue - which is a bit harder to make it 'un-noticable' due to the metallic paint.

    Thanks Janster, I'll give the old fasion way 1st with paint, Wet Sanding, buffing and wax, if that doesn't work, I'll try that product when I get to my Desperate Cringing angry Stage LOL. I'm going To most likely go for a Bug Deflector to cover up that, and also protect my hood from further Cringing and sleep loss. Whats the best kind of Bug Deflector to get?

    Langka isn't gonna beat the old fashioned way. It's for those of us who don't have a lot of time and still get decent results. It's pretty hard to get a real good 'match' with metallic paint.

    I had about 7 chips show up in about a week...so I got angry...asked about poor paint problems and got told that "It happens" and solkd some touch up paint.

    I got an EGR AeroWrap...Fairly low profile-Has screws with anchors that go under the hood edge (aka...no tape) and it looks good with the Vent Visors I have.

    This is why the bugshield was on mine within 2 days of driving it home from the dealer.

    This is also why i would never remove the mudflaps, even with a side step. Those chips in front of the rear wheel from stones ricoceting off the ground and up from my front tires on my 2000 extracab used to alwats be the thing that would catch my eye, even after just washing it.

    On that truck, my only mistake was putting wider tires on and not adjusting the front flaps outward to compensate. That slightly wider tire was all it took to throw stones past the front flap. I guess-timate i had 50-60 chips per side from that.

    This i learned from past trucks as did i learn to insist beforehand the dealers do not go sticking there crap (dealership name tags) on the the tailgate, etc before i drive it off of the lot.

    I have the same thing happen and touch-up paint just protects is from the elements, but doesn't hide the chip still.

    So I took it to a paint and they quoted $150 to sand a section and color match and repaint it.

    I'm sure it would have turned out fine, but I just left it as is. So, I just left it and now don't even have to try to ignore it.

    I think like you, I was hyperfocused on it in the beginning and it stood out like a sore thumb.

    Later though, I figured it was part of the eventual decay of the truck and life in general and it just didn't matter anymore.

    6 bed D-rings, 35% front tint, X-PEL threshold, tailgate anti-theft screw clamps and nitrogen in the tires.
    Make sure the chip is clean, then make a few passes of touchup paint ( allowing 30 mins to dry between coats). and when you have built the touchup paint to just above the level of the factory paint, allow to dry completely. Then take some very very fine wet sand paper and GENTLY rub touched up area until flush with the factory paint, GO SLOW . Then you will have to polish the hell out of it with polish and wax. This is what i did when the wifes 4 runner got chipped by another door. Do what you feel comfortable and happy with.

    Theres no way it will be back to its original condition with touch up paint. You can try wet sanding to smooth it out and then polish it. Be really careful or it might just get worse.
