I recently learned my 2013 4.0 tacoma uses a chipped key.
It only came with one key- so it's been on my list to get at least two more made since I got the truck.

I read somewhere there's a song and dance you can use to program the truck to use a new chipped key if you buy the right blank-

    So- the questions I have.
    1) How does the chip work? If I just bolt the chipped key inside the dashboard, would the truck work with normal un-chipped keys?

    2) how much should I expect to pay for chipped blanks? I'm seeing them online anywhere from $9 to $96.

    3) has anyone done the above steps to program their own key?

    4) am I better off just paying the stealership prices and not dealing with this? (I'm a pretty handy person so I don't anticipate it being a problem... but I've been wrong before)

    5) Can I just take my own blank into any key cutting store and have them cut it, or should I go to a locksmith?

Currently in Gray - but in the process of packing, we're set to move up to the Oxford area in a few weeks.
Owned a house in Portland for 8 years, so I'm still in that area fairly frequently.

Ok kinda far cause I’d just program it for you.
    IMHO.
    Most expensive but best.
GO TO LOCAL DEALER WITH REGISTRATION.
Have them cut the key by code.
Your key is worn so your buying a key with a worn key profile.
Have them program it then you have 2 actual keys.

You need 2 keys to add a key.
If you have a clone key it’s not two keys.
The cheapest way to go is have a key cut and cloned at a locksmith.
The Best way is like I said above with a fresh cut key and have someone that has the
Software and unit to program it..

    so many choices lol

"You need 2 keys to add a key."
Well, I only have one- does that mean all I can do is have a new one made by VIN?
Does anyone know what that might cost? I'd likely have to drive into town to find a dealership, so that's pretty much a day killer. that might have to wait, I've got a few other things going on... although I do worry the existing key will fail, or get lost... which would be really inconvenient without a spare!

Do it yourself. Easy and much cheaper.
Note that you are actually programming your truck to the key, not the other way around. The truck has a limited number of key codes it will retain. Mine holds 2, others claim 3 or 4. You need to be mindful of the specific key blank you use as there are several that look very much alike but you need to get the correct one. Basically you look for certain features on your key, then buy the appropriate blank. Get the key off Amazon or with the kit like in the link below.

or, just the programmer and source the key elsewhere.

like my above post a clone key is the easiest. A clone key will be the exact of what you have now. You just can’t add a key by yourself later. Since you are pressed for time a clone will work for you.

I use a local locksmith. He programmed spare keys for me. It was about $50 each for a programmed key IIRC. I had 2 spares made as well as a 3rd key that only unlocks the door. I keep one key that will start the engine hid inside the truck the one that will only open the door is hidden outside. If I'm out somewhere and locked out I can get in and get home. If someone finds the spare hidden on the outside they can get into my truck, but that key won't start it. Hopefully they won't take the time to look for another hidden key inside. That key was $3 IIRC.

I lost my main key and went to my local Ace Hardware to have another chipped key cut/programmed using my spare for $85. It took about an hour since the tech did all keys lost so the lost key is no longer programmed to the vehicle.

    Well,
I wouldn't believe it myself if I didn't just see this with my own eyes- but I already have a second chipped key for this truck.
It was in my big box of spare keys.

I have no memory of putting the second key there, and the box was buried under a half dozen other boxes so I'm not sure how it got in there- but it was in there, and it starts the tacoma.

    :smack:

So.... I think now I just need a third, even if it only works for the door.
    Boy do I feel silly.
