Bingo. Use the rough-up tip thing, clean the area of all dust / debris with like alcohol or something, and then apply a coat of paint. Its not going to perfect by any means, but should keep rust away which is your main concern

Had the same thing same spot but it chipped to bare metal so I need to sand the rust away then touch up.

I have the dealer touch up paint, bought these too to be more precise now I just need to do it

I think I want to get a dealer clear coat touchuo and add that to the mgm. Extreme maybe but it’s mine. I won’t do the wet sanding because I don’t feel comfortable with that but I was watching

Nail polish to seal the chip, and don't get any on the top of the paint. It will seal the steel. Next a drop of primer applied with a paperclip straightened out, Get the primer that you can build a thicker layer with . Get a touch up pen but don't use the pen or the brush, use that paper clip and get in 4 coats of paint, which with any luck will be flush with the top coat . When that dries hit it once more with fingernail polish in chear with the paper clip .

What primer, that’s one thing I’m missing for mine. I also don’t want the crater effect so would like to build it up

Do I see rust in that chip hole? If so get this and make it be the very first thing in the hole. Follow the instruction on the can, except spray into a coffee lid or small other container and use the paper clip to transfer.

Touch up paint comes almost last. The last bit of nail polish relates to the clear coat. I can't tell what color your truck is. I assume it has clear coat .

This stuff will oxidize rust and make it hard and black. If you use this tape to the edge of the hole well, as this will run out a black stain on the top so go easy and it might take 2 or 3 applications. Let each one dry. Then move on to the build primer.

I bought an exact match pen for my previous Tacoma and worked perfectly... I personally wouldn’t pay someone to treat an area of at least 2”x2” for just 1/8” chip, BUT it is not me...

I didn't suggest anything like that. Touch up pen apx 15 bucks can of primer 6 bucks, can of rust oxidizer 6 bucks, bottle of clear fingernail polish under 3 bucks, paper clip free.

When you said OP wanted professional repair I thought body shop... that’s why i said I would not take my car to a body shop for a dent...

I don’t see why is a color match pen an incorrect or bad way of fixing a dent... but i am not a savvy in this area... what i did previously worked... no rust... but everyone is free to do it the way they think is right.

A pen will touch it up and no rust like you said . Early Man was telling him how to fill it in to the point where you dont see it . Two different ways .

There is no dent. The OP has a nasty paint chip very close to the windshield. I did mention touch up pen , but to not use the pen brush or the ball roller and to transfer with a paper clip because it is more accurate and you get more control.

I never take my stuff to any shop. Anytime I did I was disappointed and do it better than any shop I have ever gone to when I felt pressed for time. People come to me and I don't even have a auto repair shop or body shop anymore and I don't want or need the work either. But I can do it . I make my parts not buy them when it comes to body work . I am supposed to be retired, and get time to screw off in the forge making other things with fire and a hammer.

I know I kinda jumped in on op thread but nobody needs multiple threads right

Yes it is rust, happened Maybe 2 weeks ago. It was a Big Ding when it happened. Been getting stuff together and had 1 weekend all rain. I have the micro applicators to apply the product. I also have some ospho I can use for the rust converter. I’ll order that primer thanks- it seems sem is recommended by many here. I’ll probably want to get a Toyota clear pen over the nail polish

I’m thinking I’ll want to sand down the edges so there not jagged

Your paint and the OP's paint are so close in color to me and I can't tell what color these really are, that I didn't notice there was another person, asking similar questions. With chips , the prime goal is to stop rust. And yes if you have ospho get it on there. I don't want to tell a guy to go buy a gallon for a paint chip . Rattle cans of it can be had at any NAPA, AutoZone , etc.

The problem with this site is there are too many guys that will tell you how to do a thing but they take theirs to the Dealer. At the same time they are wiseguys about it.

I would do the seal, the build the paint, and see if you really need to sand the edges, before you sand the edges. The paper clip will allow you to build and precisely place fluids where you want them and they should not run.. It takes time, but small repairs can be blended pretty well.
