I was adjusting the valves on my 3rzfe, I had to remove all the shims because they were so off. Because I didn't feel like doing the shim measurements myself I chose to put each shim in its own ziplock and take them to get measured at the dealership.

I was aware that turning the cam over without the shims in place could lead to it binding and breaking the shim bucket, so when I felt it catch I turned the cam back a touch, put a piece of feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the shim bucket, and then proceeded to snap a rice sized chunk of metal from the shim bucket.

My shim bucket now has a notch in it that shouldn't be there. Should I replace the shim bucket? What is the process for replacing the shim bucket?

If the chip is small take the shim bucket out and touch it up with a jewelers file and check the fit for rotation. The bucket's purpose is to hold the shim.

I think I would have to remove the cam to get to the bucket.

I don't disagree with that, but if I'm removing the cam to get to the shim bucket I'm already at the point were I might as well replace the shim bucket because its already apart. Does anyone have a writeup on cam removal and reassembly?
