Hey all. I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a predicament this weekend and I need some advice. I own a 1995 Tacoma with the 2.7 3rz. I was replacing front main seal and as I was re installing the crank pulley and harmonic balancer I didn’t have the gerotor aligned correctly and I jammed the pulley into the key in the crank and it got forced down and chipped the sprocket for the timing chain. Is this ok to run or is it a big no (I really dont want it to grenade and dick my timing). If it’s not okay it obviously becomes a timing chain job and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the timing chains in these 3rz as I understand it’s a big job. (Pulling head and oilpan) any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To get timing cover off....there's two top bolts thru the head.....
so have to pop off timing cover to get those two....but not pull head.

And have to drop front of oil pan to get the bottom ones.

Most of these still have the FIPG caulking for a pan gasket.
So you'd have to remove the pan and regasket.

IF that jumps timing....most likely some valves get bent.

Is it just chipped on the edge......or does it go all the way thru

Hint when installing a brandnew HB....knock down the sharp edges on the new HB's key slot...
so it doesn't catch/stab the edge of that key and do some major damage.

You cant see whats behind that....blind stabbing......slow and careful ...

Deburring /taking the edge off a little is way safer than what could happen..
It wont hurt the key slot at all.....

    Ugh
3RZ/2RZ….to get off T cover, oil pan dos need to be RI’d
Took me 4 days (including cleaning 28yrs of that flaking oil/dirt chips off all accessories and brackets)
    Think book time is 12.8hrs

Dang is the crank sprocket cracked from your red circle pix?

    if so, would not start/drive

You need a pic of that gear chip at exactly 180 degrees...
where the chain is lifted off....so you can see how deep it goes...

even then I'd still replace it...

Dont listen to CC....you already have most all that stuff apart anyways...
it'll give you a chance for a free valve clearance check while your going that way....

I'd replace the oil pump cover seal while you're in the neighborhood...
super easy while everything is apart.

When I put everything back together, I only use conventional gasket on the timing cover and oil pump cover.....
ON the pans ,,,,,engine/tranny, valve cover I did not go back with the FIPG....I opted for modern silicone gaskets instead......which are super easy to kink....

Thanks all, I’ve decided to go ahead and do the timing chain. Could be fine but I want the piece of mind. If anyone’s done a timing chain on a 3rz and has any specific pointers or tips I’d love to hear them!
