Chirping sound

2nd gen 2014 tacoma sr5 4x4 v6 86k miles

I read various threads about the fuel pump problems and pulley problems causing chirp.

Mine is almost quiet at idle, gets louder when engine speed up, goes away when I put truck in neutral, comes back when I put it in gear and going over 10 mph. Not too loud. More of a chirping than anything. Cant figure out what's going on...

 

I found this on an FJ forum. Looks like a good place to start:

How to determine which one is bad?
When the engine is running, carefully look at the pulleys and see if any of them is 'wobbling'. If that does not work (and usually its not very accurate), with the engine off, undo the tension on the serpentine belt and spin each tensioner individually. Usually you can tell which one is bad by a rapid stop, a wobble, squeal or anything out of the ordinary.

so I replaced the belt and all 3 idler pulleys. the sound is still there. if I depress the clutch pedal a little, the sound goes away.

I read the throw out bearing issues is 2005 to 2011, so what could my problem be?

any ideas?

 

Throw out bearing. Its fine until you hear it with the clutch engaged. Common problem on Toyotas.

 

Yep, throw out bearing chirp associated with the RA60 6spd tranny. URD makes a repair sleeve/TOB replacement.

How long has your chirp been going on for?

Do a little more research on that. Its hit or miss. Most people just deal with the chirp.

 

well I ready some bad reviews of the URD kit here, where it only worked for awhile and then URD didn't refund the guy.

the TSB only covers up to 2011, so my 2014 shouldn't be effected right?

5spd auto here... No chirps, no grinding, no missed shifts here. Can't be too much help, but I'm in for learning the cure

Your 5 speed is a lot less likely to have it happen. There is some sort of engineering flaw in the Ra-60 that causes the input shaft to wear, and in turn causes the bearing to wobble and chirp. The TSB is also reported as being hit or miss, with the issue returning within 30kish miles mostly. I have yet to read of a case where the bearing grenaded, so I think its just a common issue with the 2nd gen 6 speed that most people just deal with. My dad being one if them. Our dealer wanted $1400 to do the TSB on his '08, but another shop told him not to worry about it until you hear the noise with the clutch engaged.

I know the 6spd is a weak trans, just here for the cure.

 

Definitely the dreaded throwout bearing chirp...common issue for Tacomas across 1st and 2nd generation. My 04 has done it with 2 clutches now, I actually replaced the first clutch because this noise started happening and then 10k miles later it came back on the new clutch. New TOB both times. So I just live with it now.

I've heard good things about the URD fix but unfortunately for me, I'm pretty sure it's only for 2nd gens.

 

yeah that's nothing. 1 year? c'mon that's 12-15k miles.

i'm okay with that as long as things don't get worse and I wish I had done something sooner...

 

The Ra-60 is also used in the Camaro, but it has either a hydraulic assist clutch or internal slave cylinder (dunno which) and that car doesnt have the issue that the Taco has.

 

The throwout bearing very rarely actually "fails"....however if it does, it can be catastrophic (puncture through the bell housing or something like that). But from what I've read that almost never happens especially with how little power we make with these trucks compared to other applications where the bearing does fail.

I've lived with mine chirping for probably 30k miles now at least and it comes and goes but it's only real consequence is how annoying it can be.

 

Thats all dependent on the person as well.. i drive 30k a year easily..
