New here and looking for an answer to a chirping sound I've been having. From under the truck, when I give it gas there is no chirping but when I let off the gas to slow down or hit a steady speed there is. Loud especially when I start it up. Doesn't do it all the time but most of the time. Little researching I've done...could it be the U-joint needs some grease?
It's a 2001 Prerunner, SR5, extended cab, manual trans. everything is stock about 66,000 miles. All maint. is kept up with and from what I've read the joints are supposed to be greased when I get the oil changed?
    Thanks

Its the U-Joints on the drive shaft, i had the same thing on my 2001 prerunner, Just clean them off and grease them with a grease gun.

THeres one at the tranny, 3 in the middle where the 2 pieces came together and then 2 at the axle, doesnt take to long to do, just make sure You do it right and it should fix it.

Lol thats my bad, I figured he was new and we may as well point him in the right direction right off the bat. I was hoping it didn't offend him. If I would have been certain of the answer I would have given it right off the bat but my info was as good as his speculation.

Gray wire, Some lights in the bed area, and some character marks throughout.
Make sure your tensioner pulley is not seized up. I just pulled mine off for that reason. at low rpm it was quiet, but once the rpm's got higher it sounded bad.

One more thing, when I'm getting the oil changed should they be doing this? Think I'm gonna start doing my own oil changes again.

If you're not moving when you hear it, it's not the U joints, but they could use grease at 66,000. A slipping belt or throwout bearing for the clutch may be the issue.

I went for a ride, a few times, not making the noise anymore. Go figure.

When you hear it, step on the clutch, this will load the throwout bearing. If the noise continues at the same pitch, we can rule out the TB.

My '99 did that. It chirped while in gear (manual) and released the throttle but stopped while accelerating. I had people tell me it was the catalytic converter.

Know what it was...something I would not think of. The brakes needed cleaning, they would close but then not open back up all the way sometimes. I know I have to clean the brakes on my bike sometimes too, just never thought of it with the truck. Ever had that happen? And thanks for all the replies.

I had the same issue... chirping sound at highway speed after letting off the gas.... dealership couldn't find it.....*** it ended up being the drive shaft center support bearing****. Sound went away after a new install.
I also installed new U-joints while I was there for good measure.
