I found a decent set of lightly used wheels and tires, but noticed the width of the wheel is pretty skinny. For a 265/70r17 tire is a 17x6.5 wheel too skinny? I usually see people get 17x8's or 17x9's.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages toward mounting this tire on a skinnier wheel?

    Thanks for your help.

I would probably pass on those. Generally tire manufactured will have what width wheels are safe and suggested for their products. A lot of stock wheels are 7". The bulk of aftermarket offroad wheels are 8" to 8.5" with some 9" and wider options out there.

But, if you go with too skinny a wheel, or too wide a wheel for your tire, you run the risk of the losing a bead when you air down.
