Learn how Aperture Priority (A) mode works and you'll be fine for 90% of scenarios.

These lenses are cheap and out punch their price and I've owned them all except the 70-300. You'll need the latest firmware to run those AFP lenses on a D5300 so I would read up a bit before buying those.

Also buy them used if possible. I would buy the 70-300 if only buying one to go along with the 18-55 which I'm assuming is your "standard" (kit) lens.

    Nikon 10-20 AFP
Nikon 70-300 AFP DX VR (there are like 7 versions of this lens)
    Nikon 35mm 1.8G DX or 40mm 2.8G Micro

Be sure to share your pictures.

    Also this ^^^

And contrary to what you might initially think, a wide lens at the Grand Canyon and other large vistas is kinda lame. You want to zoom in and isolate those features otherwise they just get lost in the entire scene and there is zero scale to the image. I would also bring a tripod along if driving or if it'll fit in a checked bag. Doesnt have to be super nice either.

You'll want something wide for the slot canyons tho. 18mm on the kit lens might be a little tight but it would suffice for sure.

There are also super zooms such as 18-300 if you don't want to carry all that other shit. Everything has its trade offs.

Thanks guys! Gives me a place to do more research. Time to dig out the camera & check which lens it came with. And likely do a firmware upgrade. Any good places for used lens beyond eBay or Craigslist?

Other than craigslist I hit up my local store often and check their used cabinet. They also accept trade ins.

Feel free to DM me if you have more questions. I nerd out to this stuff lol

@nismoz33 Orrrr... if you're due for a phone upgrade and don't want to mess with all this other junk get something nice and new.

Cellphone cameras are stupid good now and you can immediately share it for ultimate IG likes.

There is a company called Moment that makes snap on smart phone camera lenses and accessories.

You've got options but a dedicated camera will give you the best quality. There is a lot to be said for portability though.

I've looked at Moment lens for a while. Only have an iPhone 7 though so not sure it's worth it over a new DSLR lens. Work provides & pays for my cell plan so no upgrades in the near future.

I might have a spare lens sitting around you can take with you, I'll PM you later. The kit lens on the 5300 is passable for landscape work- just zoom it all the way out to 18, and will do ok at night sky stuff too. Let me see what I have sitting around for you to take- I may still have a ND filter which will be great for making your sky look good out there in sunny reflection land.

One more question is what coils are you running and what notch do you have the 5100's set on?

Thanks. I am going to run 5100's. Is the ride stiff?

Any front and rear bumper suggestions from our local group? Rear needs a swingout.

I wanna put my air tank where the spare goes.
