He guys, I have a quick question you might be able to answer. I disconnected the battery Saturday morning to take out the seats and connected it again Sunday night. Now the truck idles at 500rpm (engine shakes), but it used to idle at around 800rpm.

Any ideas?

I drove it to work this morning, while it was warming up it was a bit it over 1000rpm, then when I got to a couple of stop lights and noticed that it was idling at 500rpm, then I drove in the highway for about 12 minutes, and when I stopped at the parking lot at work it it still idled at 500rpm. I guess I'll drive it like that for a few days and see if it re-learns to idle a little higher.

No codes, maybe I should have let the engine run for awhile instead of driving right away.

I'm no expert, but it is my understanding, from extensive reading here on TacomaWorld, that the ECU is a "learning" type. Meaning that the more history it has to analyze the better it can manage the engine. Perhaps being disconnected from power has made it lose it's memory and so now it has to "learn" again how to best manage the engine. I suggest letting it get up to normal operating temperature, and driving it normally, and see if after giving it some time to analyze what's going on, things get back to normal...

You we're right, after I drove to lunch the idle went back to normal, I guess the computer relearned.

It's like the first tank of gas at seasonal blend change, particularly from winter blend to summer blend, if I'm almost empty and fill up on the changed formulation, I can really feel the lack of get-up-and-go for a little while, then the ECU "sees" the difference and makes whatever changes to fuel/air mixture and/or timing that it's programed to do.

When do gas stations switch to the winter blend here in Cincinnati? It's my first winter in the north, I've always lived in the south.

Right now we are in the enviable position of having an over-supply of oil in the world. This has helped drive gasoline prices down nationally $1.05 from this time last year. Country-wide drivers have taken advantage of the lower prices and the first 5 months show the most miles driven on record. As prices have only fallen lower since then, I can only imagine that we will set a record for miles driven when the year 2015 finally ends. One of the important things that happens to help ensure this record setting pace is the changeover from summer blend gasoline to winter blend gasoline. Gas stations can start pumping winter blend gasoline on September 16th, 2015.

Refineries that have been hard-charging since April producing the harder to produce summer blends of gasoline can finally breathe. Unfortunately, as a result of these refineries running so hard, several broke down along the way. The most serious being the ExxonMobil in Torrance, CA earlier this year and more recently at the BP refinery in Whiting, IN. These breakdowns interrupted the supply of gasoline to regional stations and set gasoline prices spiking as much as 90 cents in one move in these areas. The decline in gas prices that we thought we would see in the beginning of the summer was delayed until the middle of the summer. The good news is that prices have been on a steady decline since the midpoint and there is pressure for them to go even lower.

On September 16th, gasoline stations can begin switching over to the winter blend of gasoline. Both refiners and consumers win here. For refiners they win because the winter blends are less taxing on the refinery to make. As these blends are less taxing to produce they are also cheaper. This is where the consumer wins, as some of that cost saving at the refiner's end will get passed on to them.

What is the difference and why do we make the switch?

The difference between summer and winter blend gasoline involves the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP). RVP is a measure of how easily the fuel evaporates at a given temperature. The more volatile a gasoline (higher RVP), the easier it evaporates.

Winter-blend fuel has a higher RVP because the fuel must be able to evaporate at low temperatures for the engine to operate properly. This is especially true when the engine is cold. If the RVP is too low on a frigid day, the vehicle will be hard to start and once started, will run rough.

During the summer heat, the RVP of gas has to be especially low to keep it from boiling off. Different states and cities have their own rules based upon their seasonal temperatures. North Dakota for example would have different needs for summer gas than Texas would. One general rule is the lower the RVP of a gas blend, the more it costs.

Why we do it?

Air pollution and smog in this country were getting worse and worse and the government had to take measures to stop this. The Clean Air Act of 1963 was amended several times including in 1990. This legislature looked at the use of reformulated gasoline in certain metropolitan areas with the worst ground level ozone pollution. The goal was simple, to reduce air pollution. Reformulated gasoline reduces emissions of toxic air pollutants, such as benzene, as well as pollutants that contribute to smog. Therefore, it was believed the use of reformulated gasoline especially in the warmer months was necessary for the good of the environment.

The Act consisted of phases. By 1995, all gasoline sold in the worst ozone areas must contain a minimum oxygen content and a maximum benzene content. Refining changes were made that went unnoticed by motorists. As a result, initially a 15 to 17 percent reduction in hydrocarbons and toxic emissions from motor vehicles will be seen. Another milestone was met in 2000, gasoline sold when these cities achieved a 25 to 29 percent hydrocarbon reduction, a 20 to 22 percent toxics reduction, and a 9 to 10 percent reduction in nitrogen.

Latest Results:

In 2008, the Environmental Agency (EPA) issued another update that the use of reformulated gasoline represented a significant part of the country's smog reduction strategy. Additionally, the EPA provided these:

•Emissions of six common pollutants were down 41%
•Emissions of volatile organic compounds dropped 31%
•Carbon monoxide dropped 46% and sulfur dioxide dropped 51%.
•Nearly the entire country is meeting air quality targets set years ago for carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide.

It is clear that the RFG program works and has definitely had a positive impact on the environment. Savvy drivers have gotten use to the uptick in prices that goes along with the changeover to summer blend. Subsequently, most of these same drivers also know prices should drop a little with the changeover to winter blend...as Game of Throne fans know......winter is coming!

I have a Northstar AGM battery size 31M I'd like to sell for $200.00. I bought it for I think around $380. I had it in my truck for at most a week and took it out and bought a Diehard. The post placement on the diehard worked better for my setup that the Northstar. Battery looks new.

Took my truck to the stealership (performance Toyota) today to get inspected for the frame recall, it passed the inspection (I knew it would, I am inspected before and it's solid) but they still kept the truck, they said they're going to apply a corrosion resistant compound, and the extended the warranty of my frame to 15 years! After the inspection they told me what they're gonna a replace my leaf spring for free because they're also recalled, which is awesome because mine are flat. So yeah, they kept my truck and gave me a Rav4 to drive for a day.

No after picture, cleaning the carpet sucked, there are some deep stains on it, cleaned the whole thing, looks better, but I have OCD and I think I'll get it professionally cleaned, I've heard there are places that clean them and dye them too. Do you guys know own of any places like that here in Cincinnati?

I don't know yet, but if they can clean it and dye it for less than $100 I think it would be a good deal, because with the dye it would look new.

Ok... It's supposed to be warm and partly dry this weekend. And I have a lot of stuff accumulating, so, I'm thinking I'm going to try to install the snorkel on Saturday. Just to get that part done. It's supposed to be a 6 to 8 hour project all by itself from what I've read.

Then in a couple of weeks, the Grill from @HomerTaco is another 1 day project.

I think the bumpers, winch and lights are going to be a whole weekend (2 day) project in and of itself, and I don't want to try to do too much all at once and get jammed up and in a hurry and mess something up.

So... If anyone want's to come over and have a beer and watch me cut into a perfectly good fender this Saturday (Dec 12th) , PM me and I'll give you the address...

I know the Kentucky boys have a meet planned, and I thought about doing that, but this just makes more sense to go ahead and get this done...
