Made it back home (2180 miles) safe, relaxing with the wife and kitties before heading back to work on Monday.

Trip went great overall, saw alot, with many lessons learned about my rig and gear, so much to process.

Between my buddy (Kyle) and myself (Mark) we have over 2000 photos and videos.

I'll be putting together a trip report in chronological order with routes followed, photos, and videos.

May take me a couple weeks so please bear with me.

A shout out to @MTgirl for all her advise and help. It was great meeting you in person.

surprised you didn't kill your tire on that rock, noticed it in the full video from yesterday.

Brand new Faulken Wildpeak AT3W's with full tread depth made the difference I imagine. That one was fairly round, there were many many others much worse I made a "point" to avoid.

Look what I found 15 min from my house, better explore it before they block it off.

If I remove my jack, gas cans, and rear light pods I can still pick up 4x8 sheets and 2x4's. Rear lights pods just require unbolt and unplug.

It was funny the "how the hell" looks I got when I wheeled the lumber out to my truck. :)

Some lesson's learned from my 2019 Overlanding MT/ID trip:

    1) Less is More: I took to much stuff. To much food (3x what I needed). To much gear (25% more than I needed). To much gasoline, my rig holds 3 - 20L jerry cans (approx 16 gallons total). It is a piece of mind basically having an extra tank full of gasoline but I believe it will never be needed for overlanding in North America. 2 - 20L jerry cans should be more than enough. 45lbs in weight savings would be a nice trade off.

    2) Ease of access for unpacking & repacking of bed area items: With my rig only having access to the bed area from the rear I had to follow a procedure for removing items. Knock off excess dust from rear rack cover, unzip rear rack cover (78") and remove, open swing away tailgate (easiest part), lay 6x8 tarp on ground (otherwise dust sticks to everything), unpack and lay on tarp tightly packed bed area until all items needed can be reached, reverse entire process to repack, most of the gear had to be unpacked just to remove the 20lb propane bottle, Needless to say the whole process was a pain in the butt, which ended up changing how the daily routine went from what was anticipated. i.e. less full lunch stops and full evening camp setups

    3) Water does not go far: 18 gallons of potable water only lasts 50% of the time I anticipated, I calculated there should be enough water for (4) - 5 min hot water showers and enough left over for 2 evening dinner clean-ups, WRONG, the 18 gallons only lasted for (2) hot water showers and (1) dinner clean-up so basically it lasted one full camp setup evening

    4) For A to B type overlanding trips, evening camp setup and morning takedown/repack needs to be quick and easy: After driving on the trail (often slow, rough, and dirty) all day I figured out fast the last thing I wanted to do was take 2 hours setting up full camp, just to turn around and spend 2 hours the next morning on takedown/repack, base camp (2 days min) overlanding trips it would be acceptable in my view

    5) Campgrounds are for campers not overlanders: stayed in a few campgrounds during the trip, noise, lighting left on all night, burning trash in their campfires then left smokey smoldering all night, next trip I'll try not staying in any if I can help it

    6) Western dust is not Eastern dust: we have plenty of dusty dirt roads in the south east, and your vehicle will get completely covered driving on them, but our dust must be larger particulate because it just does not penetrate like the western dust, my back door seals couldn't even keep it out, it's like talc or "moon dust" as we started calling it, funny how you start to recognize piles of moon dust and walk around to avoid stirring it up :D, the entire inside of my cab was coated, (don't laugh) I spent a couple hours with an electric leaf blower and a dry shammy mitt dusting it worked pretty good, the Australians apparently deal with severe dust they've figured out a positive pressure gradient works best to keep out dust in sealed areas, positive pressure can be achieved my using an air ram scoop into the semi-sealed space

My full rack cover/enclosure did an excellent job of mitigating dust contamination, I'd estimate it kept out 95% of the dust with only minor contamination mostly concentrated in the bottom of the bed, very little if any up high. An almost perfect solution for the dust if it were not for the difficulty the dust made unzipping the 78" zipper on the rear panel. Zippers do not like moon dust.

*only failure during entire trip (self-induced), someone forgot the latch pin was engaged and tried closing the gate

The trip was an overwhelming success, the above lessons learned will only go to enhance my next trip and my overlanding setup.

    Stay tuned. ;)

I warned you about the dust.....

and yes, the Aussies have it figured out. These campers have a positive pressure system that keeps dust out while they're traveling.

What a great read! You have real skills!! How much do you think you spent on everything (as far as mods and fabricated parts)?

I'll calculate an estimate for you tomorrow, I'm curious myself. Not really sure as the cost was stretched over 2 years.
