    wash, dry, clay, polish, wax.

clay bar takes away all impurities from the paint, small dirt and other particles that are in the clear coat and it cleans dirt and particles out of small scratches. not worth the time if you dont care (obviously). but if you are detailing it is a must and shocking difference. dont do it every time you wash tho, unless you are gonna polish/wax because it will remove your coat of wax. and yes it removes overspray as well :)

also, there are different grades of it, just like different sand paper grits. if you dont see results, then you might have a weak grade.

I own a small mobile detailing biz and do full details out of my garage at home, i know this stuff and its great tool when detailing

I know a guy in a local Subaru club who details professionally.
After hiring him to do our car one time - that was all it took.
I do a clay bar treatment to my truck & the wife's car every year now.
Ideally, I like to do each vehicle every spring to get rid of the winter road grime and once in the fall as a preventative to winter road grime build up.
The reality of my schedule dictates that I only get it done in the spring :(

I use the Mother's kit, and I get it at Advanced Auto Parts.

WELL WORTH THE TIME & EFFORT - DO IT!!

it does not in fact remove scratches... it is to remove or dislodge any foreign objects that have adhered to the paints surface like over spray or rail dust. typically in our recon shop that is the only real use for it. if we had a vehicle that had over spray on it we would use the clay bar with some kind of spray lubricant like a spray wax they work the best or window cleaner depending on what is on the vehicles surface. then we would cut or polish the vehicle with a foam pad and either a cutting agent or a polish to remove any scratches that have found their way onto the car or truck. in fact anytime you touch your vehicles surface with anything and i mean anything you are in fact scratching the paint so smearing clay around on the paints surface will actually cause scratches not remove them. if you are going to use a clay bar make sure and change your surface as you go you do not want to rub the caca that you take off of one section say the hood on another panel of the vehicle, also be light you do not need to press hard undue pressure will almost always ensure that you leave behind scratches.

There are two schools of thought as to what a clay bar does. One school says it pull the contaminate out of the paint the other school says it sheers the contaminate off at the surface of the paint. Either way you should have a pretty smooth surface after using the clay bar.

Trust me, claying your car is DEFINITELY worth it, no matter what anyone says about not doing it. My father owns a car wash in Carlsbad,CA every brand new Lexus, Porsche, and Ford come in from the dealerships and we clay bar them before they sell them. Im 18 now and have worked there for the past 4 summers, clay cars almost every day im there, not that time consuming if you know what your doing and worth it if you ever detail your truck

I had never heard of the clay bar before reading about it here. I used the Mothers kit the other day with great results...is the clay in that kit concidered light, medium or heavy?? The reason I ask is I wanted to pick up some more saw some bars at an automotive detailing store that came in different consistencies (light and heavy.) Which one would you recommend that's close to the Mothers clay?

The meguiars/mothers clay is definitely on the light-medium side. Heavy is typically used for removing overspray. I've only had to use a heavy cut clay a handful of times. You're fine w/ a light or medium cut.

I had heard about "claying" but honestly I was skeptical. My truck always washed & waxed up nice so I was happy. Then reading all the testimonials on TW I decided to set aside a Saturday before the winter set in and see what this clay bar stuff is all about.

So that Saturday came and I watched the Meguiars how-to video's on youtube and then went to my local Advance Auto Parts and picked up a Mother's California Gold Clay Bar kit on sale for $12. WOW! The results were fantastic! Though it was time consuming it was easy to use. Claying not only smoothed the finish but took the shine to another level. I'm a believer now and claying will be a part of my detailing routine from now on.
