I really like the TS-480HX, and I was going to buy one for my Tacoma. I couldn't justify the expense, when I already own an IC-7000. I was considering a Tech Deck to mount the TS-480HX head.

Regarding installing a NMO mount antenna. Is the best spot to drill above the dome light?

I drilled mine further aft, as I might drill a second hole forward of the dome light and I wanted good spacing. I also think it looks better a little bit aft. The headliner is not difficult to drop.

I realize this is an old response but to put it on the record for anyone who finds it, there's an 18mm hole about 8-10" from the bottom of the truck dead center in the back of the cab (edit: in a double cab.. no idea on the access) similar to the plug under the hood people use to run amp cable. I pulled the plug from the outside and there was insulation so I'm guessing it's hidden from the inside but you could drill out the plug and run the cable in through there without adding to the holes in the truck.

Nice find!!! I ended up running my coax along the right side of the frame and up through the grommet where the A/C condensation exits.

You may want to check out a ham radio. They are much more capable and you can communicate over longer distances. They are becoming more common than CBs.

Ham radio antenna,Firestone Ride-Rite air spring Snug Top topper, and a rifle rack y'all ..Moroso Catch Can, De-badged.
Back in the day I had a Uniden 510 to talk short range to my group..
Today it's ham radio as CB turned into chaos, don't know what its like today as I never looked back once I went to ham radio. You'll need to pass a relatively easy test to get your tech license, that license gets you into the world of amateur radio. Legally Use higher power than CB and be able to communicate short or long distance. You can step up to the next level license and talk world wide. Or you can look into GMRS, which also needs an fcc license which doesn't require a test just cash. It all boils down to what your needs are.
Any radio is better than none specially if there is no phone service. Cost have come down in ham radio as a Chinese made ham radio start at ridiculously low prices. If CB is still your choice look into Uniden 510 (compact unit) or Cobra ssb radio for more flexibility..
    73 to ya..

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
I know a few guys running a Cobra 75WXST and really like them. They are small and have the weather channels on them. I had one and had reliability issues with it. I'm running a Uniden PRO520XL. So far the only complaint I have is no weather channels, but I get them on my ham radio. The biggest limiting factor in the Tacoma is space. Unless your okay with mounting on top of the dash, your going to need a small radio. Just remember there is a knee air bag on both sides.

As @sdsurfer mentioned guys are starting to switch over to ham. The two biggest downside's are cost and you need a licence, but that's really about it. You're around $100ish for a good CB, a decent ham radio starts around $200 if you just want the 2M band. Add the 70cm band and they start around $300 for a decent one. They have considerably more range then a CB. CB's are limited to 4 watts, the ham radio the I'm running can put out 50 watts. The other big plus is a lot of the the ham radios have a detachable face plate. For me I have the body under the seat and the face plate on the dash.

Whether you get a CB or ham depends on who your with and what the area your in uses. I have both because I need a CB for my job and a lot of guys around here still use a CB on the trail, but some of the guys I run with use a ham radio and the ham's range would be much better in an emergency if you don't have cell signal.

I plan on doing something similar but using mount which reinforces what you did and gives threads for the ram ball mounts.

I use the vent ring with a custom printed mount that accepts a small bushing attached to my radio faceplate. Makes it quick and easy to stash the radio.

Got my Ham license on Saturday, now the planning begins...

Are their any dual band radios with all of the controls and display in the handset, similar to the Cobra 75WXST? Should I just suck it up and get a radio with a detachable faceplate? Now that I've already got a CB mounted in the armrest, I'm going to have to get a little more creative with the ham.
