I only ask because I heard those car washes from gas stations have some stuff that makes your paint fade etc

However, it would be good to hear that Toyota takes care of the other guys clear coat issue. That's fucked up. They should simply say ok, we'll take of you. End of story.

'Clearly' something is wrong with his clear coat. An error was made. Period. Fix it.

I'd pay the difference to get the whole truck repainted in a custom color. Why have the stigma of a repaint with a stock color?

I don't think it's 'stuff'. I think it's just an accumulation of debris on those 'soft' ribbons that dangle from the ceiling. They're not soft anymore when they get full of grit. They become sandpaper!

I wondered that since it's only been out a couple years, and it did seem fairly popular.

I know hindsight is 2020 but I've had my blue taco over 2 years almost 40 k and no flaking but I hand wash it regularly and always use a wax at the end. However I have noticed my front headlights starting to flake anyone else seeing that?

So I do work in a body shop, and there's 3 situations that come up with oxidation like this:
    1. Manufacturer Problems, in which case if there isn't a recall they will repair what's messed up and will guarantee what they fix

    2. Chemical abrasion, like parking near a chemical plant or never washing your vehicle.

    3. Age and abuse, too long in the sun and too many trips through the automatic car wash.

Either way, at the age of your truck, the dealership is doing the right thing to repair what's messed up. I'd be happy with that, if you wanted to keep this specific truck.

Otherwise, yeah, take a buyback/high trade in value if they offer and let corporate research and see who else has this issue and perhaps they'll finally realize they need to do a recall or something, if they haven't already.

Paint repair rarely ever lasts as long as the original could.

Protective coatings from the dealership are way overpriced. But no matter what coating you get put on, those car washes will obliterate the clear and wear down any coating on top.

Brush washes = scratching your paint
All auto washes = harsh detergents that strip waxes and sealers as well as any other protective products you put on your truck. They also dehydrate plastics and rubbers.

Ideally you want to put a sealer or coating on your paint at all times and also keep plastics, rubbers, headlights etc coated with some type of UV protection. Going through an autowash just strips it all off because their soaps are not pH balanced.

I hate automatic washers. But unfortunately, we go months without going above freezing, so it's the only option for me during that time. As soon as it warms up, I get going on polishing and sealing.

You don’t have a place with the wands where you just use hot water?

You can get screw lids for 5 gallon buckets so you can haul your prefilled two buckets to the wash and clean there just as you would do at home.

OR pay for a local detailer to handwash in a shop. Around me its like $35.

I will tell you though, if you have quality sealers or a coating... you really don’t need to wash your truck that often.
I wash maybe twice in the winter.

We do, but it's just so dang cold. Even with hot water, by the time you're done drying, your fingers are frozen. I generally go a little overboard on polishing, waxing and sealing, I actually enjoy doing it. After 13 years with my 2nd gen, it still looked new. But every spring I have to do lots of correcting.

Your statement about first gen paint is wrong just ask my CBP however I agree clear coat should last way longer , but I thought we bout these trucks cause they run forever not because they look good forever imo, good luck though

Believe it or not I wear my parka, insulated pants and have waterproof pants and a Goretex coat I will wash my truck in if needed.
Im a Packer fan, we live by the philosophy there is no such thing as inclamate weather... just inclimate clothing XD

If its really cold I’ll just rinse the truck and underbody well. Thats really all thats needed with the salt.

I would rather let salt sit on my sealed paint for a month than do an autowash and then have no protection from salt at all.

Plus autowashes cost too much.... Thats $12 I cant spend on new products.

In the middle of winter I do go to the self serve car wash and use the wand to spray all the salt and brine off the frame and body, just try to stay away from the door handles so they don't freeze.

Wet sand and polish. There are kits out there that you can buy that work with a hand drill. Once you're done though you can use a diluted polyurethane coating like minwax and it'll restore the headlight.

So I am really concerned about all these posts about BBP fading... I am looking at buying a 2018 TRD OR BBP right now.. every post I've seen is for a 2017 truck. Did they get it right for 2018? Then again they discontinued the color for 2019.

I theorize that the issue is only for 2016-2017 trucks, and maybe only those built in Mexico.

Has anyone seen mention of a 2018 BBP truck with clear coat fading?

For those who have experienced BBP fade, was your truck made in Mexico or Texas?

Given the option, I'd probably avoid BBP to not have to deal with the hassle had they not fixed it. Plenty of other colors out there, and I haven't heard of any others having the same problem.
