Clear coat fading !

You can expect Toyota to send a rep out to look at your truck. You will want an entire repaint because my hood and doors were doing the same thing. Toyota will take care of it I can almost guarantee.

 

Thanks Seadog! I totally agree. I was originally back pedaling a bit when speaking with the Service Mgr at my Dealership and saying that at the very least I want the entire cab repainted but I now know that's a ridiculous concession on my part. I didn't pay over $37K for my baby to settle for a halfast fix!

 

Just heard back from my Dealership. Says that Toyota will only repaint the affected areas. This is total b.s. !! Told him that it's absolutely unacceptable because there are other owners in this forum that have seen this spread to other areas of their vehicles and Toyota has provided full repainting of their vehicles. Seadog, you had mentioned that you got a full warranty re-paint? Would you mind telling me what part of the country you're in and when you had this done? Maybe that will help my case if I can provide more specifics on other cases? I dunno.

mine was made 12/16 in mexico. DCLB TRD OR. i bought it in january of 17, not have 55K on it

 

Hey Seadog, the Service Mgr at my Dealership asked if I could provide him the VIN number of one of the vehicles that received a complete warranty paint job. I guess he's wanting to confirm that Toyota has in fact provided a full repainting of people's vehicles or maybe it would show that you had a different set of circumstances than what I'm experiencing. Anywhooo, I hate to even ask because you don't know me from Adam, but any chance you'd be willing to share your VIN # with me so I can send to my Dealer? If you don't want to I totally get it. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks again for all your input and feedback with what you've gone through. Sucks that Toyota is starting out this way. Would have thought that after the whole rotting frames fiasco years ago that they would just do the right thing out of the gate but I guess they have to do their due diligence.

 

Roth_nj, mine is a Double Cab, TRD Sport, Blazing Blue Pearl, 2017. Not sure where it was made though.

 

the white sicker on the drivers door frame tells you the build month/year and country of origin






so far we have:

• roth_nj 12/2016 mexico paint is fine
• bb2017 10/2016 mexico bad paint
• djintn 12/2016 mexico paint is fine
• grueinthebox 08/2016 usa paint is fine
  

 

I highly doubt the extended warranty covers paint FYI

I worked at Toyota for awhile and most aftermarket warranties and the Toyota warranty (JM&A) don't cover cosmetic issues

 

I don't think you can blame paint issues entirely on the move to low-VOC paints. My BMW was painted (in the South Carolina factory) with water-based paint, and it still looks great after 21 years. My money would be on a bad run of paint/clear from whomever supplied it to Toyota at the time.

 

Certainly, but "water-based" would be about as low-VOC as you can have is my point.

A key point I didn't take into account is that the clear on the BMW might not have been water-based, even though the paint was. Not sure if water-based clear is even a thing...

 

2017 built in San Antonio in August of 2016. ~33k miles and it's looking fine.

 

Roth_NJ, sure enough, made in mexico !! More and more this issue seems to be exclusive to 2017 BBP Tacos made in Mexico. Ironic isn't it? Tacos made in Mexico? I'm here all week! Try the meatloaf!

 

Why would you think that the Toyota Factory "Bumper-to-Bumper" 3 year warranty which is supposed to cover "any defects in workmanship" NOT cover a paint DEFECT that has appeared only 2 years into the warranty period? That makes absolutely no sense at all! A workmanship defect can be anywhere on a vehicle. I'm not buying that one!

 

..............and for those of you who want to jump on the "bash American Manufacturing" bandwagon, my truck with this paint issue was NOT built in America. It was built in Mexico! I'm in Manufacturing in the Northeast and we take a ton of pride in what leaves our plant and I'm sure that anyone who works in one of the American Toyota plants does as well! Just sayin.

2017 built 09/17, Mexico built, Colorado living(ie: higher elevation). So far, so good.

High quality sealant applied every 6 months, garage kept...a lot of summertime in the garage too (doesn't get all day every day harsh sun).

 

I was responding to you. Dom Mazzetti. You had mentioned that you didn't think that Toyota Factory warranties covered cosmetic issues. Wasn't that you?

 

10/17 BBP built in Mexico kept outside and paint is looking good.
