Like the title says, anyone got any clever ways to load and unload a rack and wedge style RTT with only one person? Estimate in the ballpark of 200-220 lbs total.

Unfortunately the obvious hoist system in the garage rafters doesn't work for me.. My truck wont fit in the garage with the RTT on :annoyed:

Currently theres an old A-frame swing set on the property. I made a wooden frame with slings under the RTT to pick it with a chain fall. Honestly this works well, but its not truly one person. I need a buddy to guide the rack up or down while I run the chain fall from the side. It also should be about a foot higher ideally for more clearance. And the ground isn't level which makes it more challenging

I've tossed a bunch of ideas around in my head so far like a small forklift, tractor with forks, gantry crane, big ass engine hoist, new three bay garage with a high bay in the middle :D

Also thought about buying a cheap marketplace engine hoist (1 or 2 ton) and welding an extension tube to make it taller. I think the angle of it at full height would be my only issue - where the lift beam would hit the RTT. So an extension lifting the ram and pivot point up might just work

Not very helpful for you but mines a softcover(~100 lbs) and I take mine on and off all the time by myself. I put my bedbars on first. The tent happens to balance really nicely on my creeper so I just wheel it over then tip it onto the tailgate then first bar. Really isnt a big deal. I have a hoist and everything but I find this easier and quicker.

No chance that works for me lol. The RTT I have is about 170-180 lbs by itself, and my rack is a full height rack.

Thinking more about modifying an engine hoist though, I think that could work. Adding height either below the lift cylinder or above the pivot

Similar struggles over here, hoist in garage to store the tent but can’t drive in/out of the garage with the RTT mounted. Mine is an older and relatively cumbersome/heavy Smittybuilt. I also mount mine to the cab-rack which means I have to either clear the hood or fiberglass topper.
I have successfully mounted it solo but feared for: my truck, my tent and my own safety.
IMG_5116.jpg I usually have to enlist my kids and wife with the promise of ice cream afterwards. PITA, really.

I keep coming back to modifying an engine hoist.. Cutting / extending the base under the ram seems sketchy. But it would pretty damn easy to weld a custom boom with a lift of whatever height I need. Just need some square tube matching dimensions of whatever hoist I buy. And some 1/4" plate. On / off with just two bolts. Could convert the hoist back to its stock form if I ever needed more lifting capacity at a lower height.

Put some 8 or 10 inch pneumatic casters under it for rolling over the grass :D
