My 1997 Tacoma RWD 4 cylinder automatic has developed a clicking sound that seems to be coming from the passenger side front wheel area. It is very noticeable when the passenger side window is rolled down.

The clicking increases as I accelerate and slows down when I come to a stop. Stepping on the brakes has no effect on the sound, there is clicking whether I am stepping on the brakes or not. The sound seems to decrease when I am turning a corner but comes back when the truck is going straight.

I have taken the wheel off a couple of times and nothing seems to be loose. Everything seem tight and in place. I did notice lots of grime build-up around 3 of the ball joints; the upper and lower A-arms and the steering joint,(hope I described that correctly).

I have read that the usual culprits are usually the brakes, wheel bearings, tires, or ball joints. I really don't think it is the tires but the other 3 are a strong possibility. I am really stumped by this and any help will be welcomed.

Rule out loose brake pads, the click will stop when brakes are applied.

Wheel bearings have and audible "grumble" when they go bad.

Tires click only when a rock is embedded in the tread.

It sounds like your ball joints are bad. You need to take a look at the whole suspension and steering systems. Your truck is getting old, and the only way to keep it on the road is by way of maintenance.
It's happening to me too with my '02, which I bought in '12. My steering is tight for now, but I'm getting new shocks, rear leafs, and rear u-joint to alleviate the bouncing and axle wrap. It's like driving a boat in rough seas backing out of the driveway (shocks), and getting tapped in the rear right before coming to a stop (axle wrap). Tires and alignment are happening too.
Maintenance is not cheap, but it has to be done if you want a dependable vehicle. Rebuild your front end, and you won't touch it for another 10-15 years, given you don't abuse it too often.
