Climate control knob upgrade

Orange. May need another light coat with more red. I'll know for sure when it's fully dry and test fitted.
Mod podge can be found at craft stores for 2 bucks or Amazon.

 

Looks great and seems like a good match. The Orange on my Tacoma seems a little less bright compared to my wife's xterra. Was thinking about using an orange sharpie. Since it's not going to be in an area where it'll get touched it might work???
What was your ratio of red to yellow/ drops per bottle?

 

I tested blue sharpie on 1 of my first batch. Not even close color wise and a pain in the ass to get in the nooks and crannies. Take the time to "paint" them.

 

Got my set a couple days ago but I don't know if I'm feeling them. There's just a tiny bit of play and that annoys me for some reason. If somebody here wants them I'll ship 'em to you for $10. ******SOLD*****

 

You can swap out the sleeve from the OEM knob to eliminate the play.

 

Still to chromey. I'm trying to get rid of it not add more. I got caught up in the frenzy and bought them because they were cheap and it'd give me a little project.

 

I was around 10:3 last I recall but I over poured the modpodge a little bit. I feel like I'm going to need the light coat red but we'll see tomorrow night. Not certain. You can always test on a piece of glass and note your ratio first.

 

If you end up with a satisfactory color match and you have an approximate formula you can share that would be great. Did you jut use a model paint brush? Also did you end up using the metal sleeves or did yours fit pretty tight? Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

 

Seems like everyone is talking about coloring the knobs. Isn't it possible to change out the bulbs/LEDs on the dash behind them?

yeah, this play annoys the fuck out of me. trying to figure out how to solve it.

also a bit disappointed that they don't have a painted mark that you can see during the day.

 

After my 10:3 I added more drops of red, I tested on a piece of glass to get as close to OEM orange as possible. (Maybe begin with 1 drop yellow?) I'm thinking a shade darker because the bulbs in the AC panel are incandescent so it's going to add a little yellow. I used little foam brushes I found in the craft aisle in Wal Mart.
I haven't put the sleeves in yet but other people in this thread have. Little slop in mine but it doesn't bother me too much.

You can change the bulbs but the led ones available are kind of crappy for overall light output. Direct hot spots with no full coverage on the panel, they don't last long etc etc.

 

I ended up also drilling out the centers with a 17/64 bit and putting the OE retainers in...worked pretty well

 

These are direct replacement for the OEM, much better light coverage and brighter than the led below, that also fits with some finageling.

these fit with a tiny bit of finagling but be forewarned the light is very direct and will not cover wide very well.

Has anyone "painted" the light rings red?

 

Mine should be here today... The mail man apparently tried to deliver them on Saturday but my work was closed.

I may cut out a tiny triangle of white vinyl material to use as a "indicator" for daytime driving. Or a dab of whiteout, haha.

I'll probably put them on while I'm at work and have to wait until later when I get off to see what they look like.

 

So does everyone experience the slight "Play" in the knob?
I would really love to get these but dont want to deal with the annoyance of play in it

Update: China delivered today!

Both the knobs and the LED bulbs replacements arrived at the same time.

Knobs from aliexpress and bulb/LEDs from ebay. Toral cost for all = $14.29

 

Is that a draft table you use as a desk?!
Can you comment on the "play" once you have the knobs installed. Those bulbs look quality too! Let us know how easy the replacement of those bulbs were too
