What does the mounting for this thing look like? Is it just soldered to the board or does it have a nut holding it in the panel?

I don't see any 2.7k pots, but you could try a larger resistance, like 3.5k or 4.2k. If it is held into the panel via a nut, you could run wires to the holes where the old one soldered in.

Well I don't have the original part in front of me, but that looks pretty damn close. Any reason why you thought it wouldn't work? The 2.5k version should work electrically

FWIW, I just checked my ‘04 and it has discrete steps. Wish I had seen this earlier I just had the dash apart this morning to connect a mic for hands free.

That's great to know. If you happen to be back in your dashboard, it would be great to get some resistance measurements on that bad boy to figure out if it can be swapped for the older continuous potentiometer

So an update from my research, my 2003 celica which has discrete steps seems to use some sort of geared mechanism - totally different. In my research online looking at other toyota models of similar years, it seems like most were using this as well. I only found that the highlander also has the potentiometer, which is likely why the kit that kirby J posted is for.

I reached out the Dorman (the manufacturer of that kit) to try to get information on the potentiometer or to see if they would sell just the potentiometer, but they wont give me shit. (big surprise)

I reached out to Toyota as well, although I doubt that will go anywhere

Okay I know this may sound redneck, but I fixed my issue with a zip tie. the inlet hose to the heater core has a cable operated valve that closes when in cool and opens when heating. I removed cable and zip tied valve closed. when winter time gets here I will reconnect cable and cut zip tie.

I did a quick google search for 2002 tacoma oem climate control and it shows different dealers and gave me the option to order one. My 02 has been doing it but when you push on it, it goes cold again. So i have just put off changing it....

I ended up just finding a used one cheap on ebay. I intended to have to pull it apart and attempt a repair (was thinking about trying to replace the carbon ink) but turns out the used one from online works well

I also needed a new bulb behind one of the gauges so that worked out well

Any updates on your eBay control panel unit? I just ordered one off eBay. Having same issues as you all. Hoping it comes in soon and all works well when I install it.

Mine worked well. It's just going to be hit or miss if the temp control potentiometer is worn out or not. It would be great to have a more permanent fix or a source to buy the specific component from

ahhhh yeah ... havent chkd in here in a few i guess. Yeah mine works Well - gotta pay attention as to the part number whether it designates green or orange back lights & filters ... i ended w/ a green even tho wanted orange - so i just tore it all apart & inserted all the orange parts i could and reassembled ... the only remaining green is the a/c & recirc buttons ... and tbf i kinda like it.
