Ok was just on some BS threads where I read it could deploy at random due to a possible short but also read about guys driving around with the light on for months.

Now running through the same issue here in Canada...air bag light came on sporadically (but nearly every time) starting about 3 weeks ago. Dealership says my truck has no outstanding recalls and claimed they hadn't heard of the recall for the clock spring. About $500 quoted to swap it.

I guess anything's possible, but it seems awfully strange that I'd run into the same problem as one covered under a major recall.

Mine came on out of no where and stayed on most of the time only once or twice it didn't come on till I was about half way down the street. I read some good write ups on how to replace it but would try to pressure the dealer to replace it since its a valid recall for most.

TRD Cold Air Intake Second Skin full triple layer insulation, Redline Tuning hood struts, Cali Raised LED ditch, fog, and rear OSRAM lights. Air ride (ride control) airbags with wireless adjustment mod, spyder led/projector headlights.
I purchased and replaced mine with the eBay (cheap ass POS) in July of 2015 after my airbag light came on. The first part I got installed and my horn went off as soon as the battery was reconnected. I contacted the seller and another identical spiral cable was shipped free of charge. I installed that one, everything worked on the steering wheel including the horn, and airbag light went dark again. Everything was fine until almost 1 year went by and my light illuminated again. I flashed the code and it's the clock spring again. Seller says they don't sell the part anymore. Bottom line, the cheap parts work, but won't last, or will have defects from poor connectivity or cheap connectors.

Does anyone have the superseded part numbers????

My 2005 Tacoma, 36000 miles, had a recall on the spiral cable. I don't remember having it changed, but the local Toyota dealer claims it was done. He screwed me in the past, so I have a very low trust level. Let's assume he really did it and I forgot, then I had 2 cables. Recently I got the airbag warning light. The Toyota dealer wanted $105 to read the error code, and then add to that the cost of parts and labor. I expected to spend close to $1000 to diagnose and fix the problem, and I did not know if they could be trusted to be honest.

I brought the truck to my local mechanic who found the problem and changed the cable for $450. Now I wonder if the Toyota dealer really did change the cable before, or not. Did Toyota change part numbers on the cable after the recall? The new official Toyota part number on the new one is 04002-04104. The number on the cable that was removed had the number 04080 77A302 A02 on a blue label. I don't know if that is right. There is a bar code, but the number makes no sense, XKP.05N.0196. Does anyone know if this was a pre-recall spiral cable?

I had the exact same issue. Got a cheap, Chinese one off eBay, solved the problem perfectly, then airbag light back on almost exactly a year later.

Ordering a real Toyota one now.

I ordered a cheap ebay one just now. My air bag light has been on for the last few weeks, but just tonight my cruise control quit working. Can't have that!

As for the cheap eBay ones lasting only a year, well I can buy 15 of them for the price of one Toyota clock spring. Look at it as a yearly maintenance item, no way I'm giving Toyota $400-500 for a clock spring, on principle alone! Just because I have steering wheel audio controls it's not under recall?

I'm pretty sure that Toyota has basically DELETED all record of all recalls for everyone in all of Canada.
Spiral cable recall (because the horn stopped working)? Nope, sorry, your vin does not fall in the range.
Leaf spring recall (because a leaf snapped)? Nope, sorry, your vin does not fall in the range.

And guess what? My vin DOES fall in the range that is printed on the actual recall document! Yeah, in BOTH cases.
    Mine's '11.

What you can do, is call up TRANSPORT CANADA 800-333-0510. In the very least, they are able to twist Toyota's arm into trying to at least **explain WHY** your truck doesn't get the recall.

OK. After driving around for over a year with no horn (that all that was wrong with mine) and not wanting to fork over $200+ for a new OEM clockspring I was discussing with a friend and he suggested this stuff. IT WORKED! I now have a horn again and no lights (none were ever illuminated in my case). Here's what I did. I took the clockspring off just like the video posted earlier and took the clockspring to my desk. I took 3-4 flat screw drivers to pry apart the clips on the clockspring and sprayed the insides really well. I also sprayed both male and female electrical connections to the clockspring. I am beyond elated. I'm hoping it will last, otherwise at this point I'm prepared to bite the bullet and install an OEM replacement myself since this will be my sons truck in a year and a half. Here's a photo of the stuff. Good luck to all. This forum has saved me more $$ over the years. Keep up the great work!IMG_0324.jpg

I ended up replacing my clockspring with oem. Bit the bullet. Ended up getting toyota to pay for half. A year and several months later this happened.

Luckily I was able to part my truck out and someone else was able to use it. He had completely broke his clockspring the day before my insurance towed the truck away.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but thought I’d post the fix for those with a 2011 Tacoma who were having issues with the correct part number. I too have the full options steering wheel (radio controls, Bluetooth phone, and cruise) and had the original cable go out (horn not working). It was part number 84306-04020. When it comes out there are two black ports and a gray port. The piece with the gray port is removable.

    upload_2018-10-2_18-38-44.jpg

    upload_2018-10-2_18-39-2.jpg

This piece is the steering angle sensor for the ECS. It is interchangeable with the new spiral cable part 84306-0E010.

So simply remove the gray plug from the old spiral cable. Install on the new cable and you should be good to go.

    upload_2018-10-2_18-43-44.jpg

Everything works in my steering wheel after replacing this way.

I've done this twice. First one was with the cheapest Chinese clock spring I could find, second was learning from that mistake and investing in OEM.

It's an easy project. I would recommend marking the steering wheel position very well before pulling it so there's no question of what going back on straight means when you re-install.

Just changed mine out, no cruise control. Bought an OEM one off eBay for $116 (or at least it came new in an OEM box.) Here’s a pic of what caused the cruise to go out.upload_2019-1-8_17-58-24.jpg

Wow, you scored if it really is OEM. Those are $300+ from the dealer.
