    He is correct.

I am still ironing things out with the vendor.

Once I place my order with the vendor, I am NOT ordering additional units unless I get another 15 or 20 participants.

Just a bunch of old crap
It's true, you do need service active to use the communication parts of the device (text and SOS). When you unbox your inReach and first power it up, it won't get past the first screen until you first set up an account for it. I was ready to start subscription service right away so I could start field testing, so I don't know if you can use just the GPS functions without an active subscription. I have some hikes coming up this month, so I'm keeping it active at least through October. Once I decide to suspend service, I'll know for sure what it can/can't do when the subscription is suspended.

See above. I can't confirm until I suspend service.

    See above.

I can try and help with any questions but I have the Inreach SE (model without GPS and before Garmin took over the company). I used it several times on hiking and biking trips to send out location pings and to check in with family. When I spent a few weeks in Canada I paid the extra for text messaging through the device and used that instead of using an internation plan on my phone (probably wouldn't have had service on my phone anyways). When backpacking I just clipped it with a biner and on my bike I used a little pouch lashed to my seatbag, dust mud and rain never effected it

So there's actually a lower plan than what I mentioned earlier. Called the safety plan. It also has the option of the freedom payments. It's 11.95/year and 14.95 for each month used. Sounds more like what you would be looking for.

Now im curious.. and @Seabass wasn't able to confirm - Can you use the standard GPS feature on all the other months that you don't pay for the inreach features?

Unfortunately @ramonortiz55 these are the only options listed for subscription. As I have a subscription also so I can not confirm. So I suppose we'll just have to wait for @Seabass to try.

That's my understanding as well, however, as @Seabass said you do have to create an account to initially operate the device which would require some form of subscription. Initially. After that? Well we'll just have to wait for feedback.

Yes, thats the way I understood it in the first place. Annual fee for basic GPS.. Tack on monthly fee for inreach services

but the annual fee is worth it for the GPS itself.
