    I think in this case it really wouldn’t matter. If the car is worth $15K and he owes $15k it is truly a wash. He is doing just as good handing the keys over to the dealer and not dealing with ass hats on Craigslist.

    If he had any equity or true negative equity the benefits would shift.

    My understanding is that the old car is worth $15k, he owes $15k and the dealer is offering $15k as trade value. If that is the case they take the car, they pay the lien holder, and it probably goes to auction.

    That being said, it’s hard to know what is really going on in this deal, I don’t think the OP even knows enough to provide accurate info.
