    Hey all,

looking at getting an aftermarket cat back. What’s the closest thing to a Borla Atak? I know it’s a 6 banger and not a V8. Suggestions anyone?

I would stick with oem .. every exhaust I have heard on this truck sounds bad . Drone . And sounds like a 4 banger .

I have no idea what the aftermarket systems sound like. I do like the OEM system on my '06 TRD OR - subtle but noticeable. My new '21 TRD OR has a factory installed performance exhaust (aka cat back) - for the brief periods I've heard it, it sounds about the same (don't yet have the truck in my driveway). What I like about it is the durability (and the sound of course) - the '06 system is 14+ years old with no signs of issues, other than a gasket issue in front of the cat. Perhaps GOTSAND?18 knows more about the aftermarket stuff.

The OEM system IS an expensive add-on at $800 - but what would you be paying for an aftermarket system in stainless steel?

The Borla ATAK is loud as shit. If you want something that annoying I’d look at MBRP.

Most folks are going to suggest that you stay stock or try the TRD cat back system. All of the aftermarket exhausts I’ve heard on these trucks sounds like absolute doo-doo. Try doing some research on YouTube. Plenty of sound clips for you to compare and contrast.

YouTube is better than nothing, but isn't good. Both your speakers and the microphone have limitations and cannot capture the true sounds.

Sounds like you need better better computer speakers :D

All jokes aside, yes, you’re correct. Most of the clips are filmed with a cellphone so the sounds is going to be different than what you’ll experience in real life. However unless you can find a friend with the exhaust system installed on their truck I don’t think there are many other options.

Lol, I heard the Atak on YouTube and thought it sounded great. MBRP sounded like trash when I looked it up.

I have also looked at the black widow widow maker muffler. I might just keep it stock though

Pretty much. It's just a caveat to relying too much on YouTube. TFL tries it all the time and they all sound like tin cans from the video.

I've been given weird looks when I say this, buuuut, I actually like the way the TRD cat back sounds over stock. Like it enough to drop almost $1k on it? Maybe...I'll get a sport hood with a scoop before I get the exhaust.

Does Borla have an ATAK exhaust for the Tacoma?

I have a Borla XS 1in2out, and I enjoy the sound and tone. Previously i had MBRP, and was fine until i got URDs ypipe and it became a raspy mess.

Think about what you just stated. How many times for 1 rev does each cylinder fire?
What difference does the angle between the cylinder banks make? None. 60 or 90, all cylinders fire once per rev.
It's the firing of the cylinders that produce the sound and not the angle between the cylinder banks.

I didn't know this was a two stroke motor. (power/exhaust)
4 stroke engines have a given cylinder fire every other revolution. (intake/compression/power/exhaust)
    ;)

The angle of the V6 changes the timing for the firing pulse.
90 degree V6 which share parts with V8 are usually 'odd fire' engines.

Same reason as to why a 180° flat 6 sounds vastly different, because one bank mirrors the other side. Or a VR6 is technically a 10°-15° V6, also naturally sounds different.

I stand corrected (doh). Nonetheless, the number of cylinders firing on each rev affects the exhaust.

So are you telling me that 2 cylinders fire on one rev and 4 cylinders fire on the next? Or 2 cylinders every 3rd rev?

As you can probably tell, I'm not an engine techno geek. Just applying what I think is common sense. Not afraid to admit my ignorance if I don't totally understand. My days of wrenching engines are a few decades behind me.

Bottom line though - I like how my TRD OR (4.0) sounds with the OEM performance exhaust. Nice tone but not obnoxious. Same goes for my "soon to drive home" '21 TRD OR.

I have MBRP turndown and I think it sounds decent and in first or second gear you get some pops. Also I like that you can’t see it when standing behind the truck and better for off-roading since it is less likely to caught on something.

Usually the angle of the V would determine the optimal firing order of the cylinders.
90 degrees between the cylinder banks have used a firing orders of R1-L2-R2-L3-L1-R3 or R1-L3-R3-L2-R2-L1. Several V6 engines with an angle of 60 degrees have used a firing order of R1-L1-R2-L2-R3-L3.
This difference changes the pulse of exhaust and how it would flow through the system. 90°can have odd firing, which will give it more of a V8 with two dead cylinder sound.
