Clunk after OME installation

    Not to long ago I installed OME all the way around. Installed 882s in the front and ended up with 3.5" of lift in the front. Ever since, when I drove over bumps I get a clunking noise from the drivers side. Sounds like it's right under my foot. Talked to a few people and they said I was probably just bottoming out and that would stop as the springs settle.

    Has anybody had this sort of problem before? If so, what did you do? Where does the front suspension hit when it bottoms out?

    Help???:confused:

    yeah everything torqued to spec. Not sure about the coilover assembly itself as a shop did that for me. But when I picked them up I thoroughly inspected bushings and such before installing.

    Well, you could swap to the passenger side and see if the noise moves over there. that will let you know if its a faulty shock, or something else....

    yeah. I was thinking about doing that. Not really what I wanted to do but maybe the best way to narrow it down. Any merit to the bottoming out theory?

    How big of bumps is this happening on? you have to hit a pretty big bump for it to bottom out.

    small. local street driving. only happens at relatively slow speeds. Mostly when going through pot holes. Rarely on speed bumps.

    then its not bottoming. If its the shock, the installer MAY have left out a bushing washer, or somthing. Move the shock to the other side, and see if the sound moves with it. If it does, the only other thing to do is take apart the shock/spring assbly. and check it out. :(

    Thanks Chris. I'll move the assembly and see what happens. I'll take another close look at the assembly and see if there is anything different between the drivers and pass side.

    The instructions say "torque to thread runout". Does that mean keep tightening til I run out of thread? Are there other torque specs? Thanks for the help!

    Yep. Torque until it stops. It will be obvious when it does, so dont throw a 3' cheater bar on it. ;)

    Well thought we might be on to something but the nut is tight. All the way down. Talked to Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters where I bought the kit and he mentioned to try and spin the spring in the house. Says to put the upper end of the spring facing out. What do you guys think. I guess it is worth a try. Prob try Chris's suggestion tomorrow and spin the springs at the same time.

    Well the noise is finally gone!! Took the coilovers out and spun them so the top end spring faces out like the photo. Then put the drivers in the passenger and vice versa. Not 100% sure what the problem is but it is nice and quiet now.

    FWIW, Im going to take one of my shocks off, and turn it to where the top of the spring coil is faceing the back....I want to see if this can happen on a second gen...

    Ok. I swapped the springs around to a few positions...No affect on the second gens...

    Good to know! It looked like on mine the spring was making contact with the UCA bolt shaft in the tower. The coating on the spring was worn from rubbing. Can't tell you how happy I am this noise is gone. Peace of mind at last...
