Hey guys just wondering if I could get some ideas. Three weeks ago I purchased a 2006 Tacoma TRD V6 double cab short bed with only 60k miles on it. The truck is in excellent condition and I love it. While backing into a parking spot turning the wheel I hear a clunk noise, happens every time!! I have not had the time to jack the truck up and see if anything is noticeable loose. If you have experienced this or know about this problem I'd appreciate any help.

Does the noise happen the instant you touch the brake pedal in reverse?

Honestly im not sure if it happens when my foot is on the brake or not, always notice it when going slow in reverse to park it.

My '09 does this whenever I drive real slow forward and reverse, not all the time though.

Read here, it was some sort of phantom Tacoma noise. Had a dealer look at it "supposedly", and they couldn't find anything wrong.

The reason I ask is that one click / clunk is normal for the first brake application after changing direction, as the front brake pads float in the fixed caliper.

Loose u-bolts are very common too.

    What is a "loose U-bolt"??

I'm getting this same type of a noise. Clunk in rt front only when in reverse and wheel turned left. Not over bumps, not turning right, not while driving. Only in reverse and turning left.

    Where is the U bolt?

You can reduce the sound of the brake pad clunk by adding a second retainer spring clip ($10 ish kit). If you remove the front wheels and look at the brakes, you'll see that there's one spring there already and holes for another. Pull the pin, add the spring and replace the pin then put your wheels back on. Easy Peasy even if you're no mechanic.

This greatly reduces the noise, but does not make it go away completely.

It would have to be one hell of a brake pad shift to vibrate through the floor and steering wheel. I've had that happen in other vehicles and never had it that pronounced. I'm thinking lower control arm noise. Going to start checking the bolts and bushings.

Mine had a knock when backing out of my drive way dealer replace the control arm now the passenger side is doing the same thing dealer told me it was the brakes but it's too loud to be that it's got to be the control arm again does a lift cause this ? Or tires or is this a common issue with the Tacoma

Searching online, I found the control arm to be the most common source of this type of noise. I talked to a tech friend of mine. We will be checking the torque on my LCA bolts Monday night. I can update the thread after that.

After describing the circumstances, he said it sounds like the suspension has loaded up and releases the tension and something is slightly loose which causes the bang. We may also check the shocks, and the tie rod ends to see if there's anything loose.

Not sure how a u bolt for a rear leaf would cause a noise in the front of the car? Am I missing something?

It could potentially vibrate up the frame rail..? I'm chasing the same kind of clunk. I'll be putting a GoPro under mine this week.

Lower Ball joints, and wheel bearings are the next on my list in the front end. The GoPro should shed some light for me.
