This isn't entirely accurate. My '16 does and I hear some early '17s also have greasable u-joints. At some point along the '17 manufacturing line, Toyota switched for whatever reason.

The ‘17’s have greasable U-joints on the front driveshaft, and not on the rear. At least that is the case with mine. Kinda weird Toyota....

All 16 mt’s have full greaseable u joints, some 17’s do. My second gen did this and my third gen does as well. Never noticed it going away after greasing them.

I might be feeling the hope with the shackle tightening. This morning the rear felt a bit more connected and there was less of a clunk compared to the morning commute yesterday. I take the backroads in the mornings and highway in the afternoons.

    We'll see. Weird though!

Yes, by design. If you are in third gear for example, at 2000 rpm and accelerating, you then quickly let off the accelerator pedal, then you punch it, you will get clanking. It's simply backlash in several components in the drive train being taken up and let off. It is designed that way, because it would be just about impossible (or at least astronomically expensive) to design a BOF vehicle with no backlash in the gearing or play in the driveshaft u joints and torsion in the driveshaft, not to mention any flex in the frame.

Woot! It was the U-bolts. No clunk on and off throttle.

I am agreeing that it is not normal.

Yea, I have the clanking noise as well in my 6MT. Happens in 4th-6th when I'm in low RPMs, going to slow for the particular gear.

yeah i get this, and i can agree with you to a point i guess. what it seems to me is that the design, if setup correctly, will snap and not clunk. so we're saying the same thing i think, but my truck doesn't clunk per se, it's a distinct snap. everything about mine suggests the perfectly built unicorn and maybe i got crazy lucky, i don't know, but we can also probably agree that factory assembly QC leaves a lot to be desired generally speaking. there's your statistics with the clunk.

They must have been loose enough to allow the axle to move slightly? Or, it was the leaf springs making noise since they weren't pressed together?

Torquing the bolts was all that I did. The sound is gone and the rear feels better when driving.

What was your torque spec for the U-bolts.
