I had a clunking sound from the front of the truck when going over bumps. Turned out to be the factory Cab Mount Bolts were busted. The dealer claimed this was a production issue.

This is NOT a "our trucks suck thread" it just took the dealer multiple attempts and a long time to find the source. Thought I'd share.

Picking the truck up tonight so hopefully it's resolved.

What did the clunk sound like because if i got over a speed bump kind of quick and get the suspension to compress alot it makes a clunking sound like something is contacting another part (and no im not compressing the suspension fully)

Do you need to know, or care?
You're not the first with this problem, but I don't think it's a widespread issue. Hopefully you are all good after the fix.

Wait, why can't it be an "our trucks suck" thread?

You'll know it's not a suspension issue because it's not consistent with a full spring compression (if you bounce the truck @ a stand-still you cant hear it). It's small pot holes, cracks, crevices, initial contact with speed-bump etc. Basically anything with quick impact.

It sounds like it comes from under the firewall area and can squeak and rattle with small vibration. Metal on metal sound. Dealer kept telling me a skid plate was loose because they couldn't find it until i went on a drive with the tech.

It would appear that OP wanted to rise above the usual circle jerk to provide some constructive and useful feedback.

^Are these the cab mounts just behind the front wheels? That area does see a lot of grime kicked up by the tires. 3rd gens no longer come with front mudflaps as std equipment, right?

Mine did come with mudflaps but i removed them shortly before this happened. Doubt it's correlated.
I did take my truck on a very light Off-Road scenario which probably put shear stress on those bolts causing them to break.

I'll ask the service tech where the locations of the bolts are when i pick it up and let you know.

do you have a pic of the actual bolt you are referring too? I have the same kind of noise but i thought it was the exhaust pipes just moving around and the exhaust mounts are not stiff enough.

I do recall seeing several similar Threads, the mounts themselves looked destroyed on the trucks.

If a light off road scenario did this I am screwed. My truck is off road a lot and none of it is "light".

The cab mounts and cab mount bushings seem to be a fairly common issue as far as "front end noise" problems on the Turd Gen. Thankfully this has not been a problem on my truck... yet. It is good to know what some of the common trends are for failures and symptoms. Can make it easier to identify and isolate issues for all of us.

I'll ask for exact location when I pick it up.
When the Tech called he said he had the damaged bolts in his hands. I'll snag a pic if i can.

Other than that I drove through a massive snowstorm in the mountains the day before the issue arouse (Off-Roading was 2-days before)
Not sure if that had any effect but those are the 2 things that occurred RIGHT before the mounts broke.

I have a feeling I will get the same run around. Smitty recommended having a tech ride along with you to ID the fault. My strategy will be to find a speed pump or pothole in the vicinity of the dealer and prove to myself I can replicate the problem. Then I will get the greasemonkey in there and head right back.

Thank you Bardown for the thread. I just recently developed this clunking sound and squeaking leaf springs after 2 miles on a dirt road today.

    Built for the endless weekend!
