I have a 2013 Tacoma with the 2.7 l I-4 engine. After sitting for awhile, there is a clunking noise a few seconds after starting. I hooked up my OBDII analyser with no results. My mechanic friend says it could just be the catalytic converter heating up. Any ideas. The truck runs well.

Pop your hood and take a video with your phone while someone else starts it so we can hear what it sounds like? Or put your phone somewhere near the engine with hood open recording while you start it.

Hmm could be a lot of things. Can you be a bit more specific?

Did you do the recall on your cats already?

Just bought a 2014 DC 4.0l w/ 16k miles and it does the same thing. Louder than a tick and less than a clunk. After warm up it goes away. Definitely not valve train noise, I can hear that too. Has me a little worried. Any feedback is appreciated.

Its probably the a/c compressor clutch engaging. Set the heater controls so the a/c and defrost is off, see if the clunk is gone
