So my clutch has decided to give up the ghost - Gadget pointed me to a stage 3 replacement from URD and it's currently on it's way to my house.

I'm kicking around doing the swap on my own because of the stealership quotes for the work...anyone got any warnings? Messing around transmissions is something I haven't done....so advice & suggestions are welcome. Ridicule is too...but only if that shit is funny...

Dealership recommended replacing the rear main seal, TOB, and said something about the flywheel...Kinda mumbled that part tho....

Get a bearing pulling tool for the pilot bearing. Also, your gonna want to have the flywheel resurfaced.

Hey Brunes have you done this yet? I have just placed and order with Gadget as well. I was getting the Stage III clutch and flywheel combo and there Throwout bearing upgrade. Also I was told by my dealer here in NorCal that toyota has an upgrade slave cylinder ,clutch fork and bracket for around $300. The dealer has installed a few here. Im looking at doing this myself as well. Truck just turned a 100,000 and Ive owned it since 4 miles on the odometer. Reason for changing out everything was the noise the throwout bearing is making and dont want to get in there again.

DIY clutch changes are a great way to spend a saturday. If you have a transmission jack, it could make things a lot easier. If not, at least a couple of hydraulic floor jacks. You may not need to lower the transmission down, consider clamping some 2x6's across your frame to make a platform to slide the transmission back on.

It is also a good idea to jack the vehicle up very high. The higher it is, the easier it can be to work on, but also the worse damage it can cause if it comes off. I like to keep at least one axle on the ground for DIY, unless you have access to a garage with a proper lift, you probably should adhere to this. Choking the rear wheels is a start, but if you're going up real high in the front, it would also be good to chain and bind the rear axle back -- you can use a 4x4 (i.e., lumber) to hold it forward against the chain holding back.

In the past, I've used pieces of 6x6 about 3 feet long, notched to hold tight in/around the front suspension. Jack the vehicle up and set it down on the 6x6. With the rear held immobile, it won't be going anywhere and you'll have lots of room to work.

A clutch disk alignment tool can be useful, but is not crucial. You can usually eyeball it pretty good with some simple tools like a piece of pipe, though if its off, it can be a bit** to get the transmission in.

Sorry folks. Hurricane Isaac changed my plans. I've got a lightweight flywheel on backorder w/ URD and the throwout bearing replacement coming. but it's gunna be a couple weeks before I can do anything w/ it.

And honestly I'm not sure that I'll have the time or energy to do anything with it if we keep this operations tempo going...

I do have a real lift / shop to use that has about 95% of what I need to do this...but I'm not sure I have time for it. We'll see.
    More to follow.

84gb-What is the gain from the new slave cylinder and fork/braket?? sorry I haven't PM'd you back...it's been crazy busy.

Thanx For the response back Brunes. I actually cancelled my Flywheel casue its not for me and what I tow with my truck. I found out that it will decrease my torque on my truck because of it being quite a bit lighter. I will need to find out more about the addition to the slave cylinder and other parts from toyota. They just mentioned there is a TSB on it and they had recommended the upgrade while I was into the clutch.
Sorry to here about the storm and what not.
Just getting the TOB and clutch Gadget just sent it out today.
