Clutch doesn’t seem to slow engine…

At times when engaging the clutch to shift there is the slightest whir felt in the clutch (similar feeling to that when you try to completely engage/push clutch and accelerate at the same…yes I understand that that should never be done just remember that from learning to drive MT). It gets a little better if I wait a little longer between disengaging accelerator and engaging clutch but that makes for slower and more awkward shifting. The feeling is almost as if the clutch is not slowing the engine down when engaged and therefore I can slightly (and I mean barely at all) feel the engine through the clutch. No weird noises (except the fact that the engine seems sound like it maintains high rpms even with the clutch all the way to the floor) nor smells. Typically happens 2-6.
Is this what they refer to as rev hang? Is there anything that can be done to avoid it?

Yeah, sounds like rev hangs to me.

I think you can have it “tuned” out. But that involves tuning and flashing the ECM.

Tacoma uses rev hang when the catalytic converters are cold, its annoying but part of many modern manual vehicles.

You'll eventually get used to it and forget about it altogether.

My 2017 does it, and I'm used to it.

One thing I may be doing now, is not revving as high between shifts.

I figured if it doesn’t hang the engine would bog out at too low of an rpm. But it’s annoying

Ok i will try and shift sooner…or in other words shift at lower RPMs and see if I notice a difference. Thanks for the help.

I know not what horrible ailment you guys speak of…

give me until tomorrow when I drive again and and I’ll come back here and join the misery and complaints once I realize how horrible these tacos are…
    :D

*No but seriously, I do not have this experience…
Might your clutch need some adjustment?

I think you’ve driven a lot of random crappy vehicles, no offense, but you’re not as picky as some of us.

Rev hang. It usually happens at sub 2500rpms when going from 1st to 2nd. Also happens in all other gears. Usually, I wait about 1-2 seconds before clutch in. I believe this is done for emissions, and also I heard that rev hang helps prevent or reduce oil burning from high vacuum.

RevHang happens regardless of engine temp.

It seems like the rev hang exclusive to when the engine is in the higher range of rpms, like it has something to do with the Atkinson cycle and the direct injection systems. I only seem to experience it when I getting on it.

That is not when I get it. But, it does respond to a certain set of parameters. Hopefully vF Tuner finds the solution. It is greatly lessened in the Ultimate / EROM 1.2 test tune that I had.

I just learned not to get in a hurry with my shifts and it's not an issue. Annoying, but not a problem.

There is nothing wrong with it.
    It's just a feature.

I still haven't felt the need for the accumulator delete mod or a tune, just because it's all the rage on the internet. o_O

I am on the adm and a tune and tried to convince oztrd too. He drove my truck and he said he felt very little difference. The adm is really nice though, as well as a tune.

I tried to get it to hang when I left a stop light today (in a 55 zone) but my music was cranked and I couldn’t hear it well enough nor could I feel it.

    Nice, maybe.
    Necessary? Highly unlikely.

I haven't found a situation in 5 years with mine where I "need" either tweak. Nor a super charger, or a turbo.

I must have lucked out an got a "built on Wednesday before lunch" truck.

It's too bad the rest of you have to go through this pain of retuning your trucks and eliminating some parts to get the truck to perform properly.

It’s probably just the way you word it but the pressing in the clutch (disengaging the clutch) does not cause the engine to “slow down”. In fact it has the opposite effect and reduces load on the engine by disconnecting it from the driveline that is slowing the engine down.

    Ignorant thinking, no.
    Practical thinking, yes.

If you feel that a tune or accumulator delete makes your MT drive SO much better, then you clearly felt it was lacking something. Or, you just followed the crowd with "Monkey See - Monkey Do".

I don't feel that my truck is lacking anything in either department, so I have no interest in changing either of those items. That's five years of seat time in this truck on and offroad.

Same with my '97 Taco. Purchase brand new as well and now 25 years and over 255k miles of happy stock motor, and only one clutch replacement, it drives just fine to me as well.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have noticed this rev hang, but it has never bothered me much. It does not affect the way I drive. I assume it’s there for a purpose and common to modern engines with a manual, but I haven’t driven any of them. My previous automobile with a manual was a 2001 Subaru and it didn’t have such a pronounced rev hang as I remember.
