I just bought a 2006 Tacoma with a manual transmission. The truck will only start sometimes with the use of the clutch and when it doesn’t I’ll just use the clutch start cancel switch. I had a hard time getting the truck into 4lo but after a few tries I got it to go into 4lo now it won’t come out. Would it be a problem with the clutch switch not allowing to switch out of 4lo or is it a 4wd system issue?

Ok cool no need to spend money on something that I can wait to replace I.e. the clutch pedal switch. I’ll play with the truck more tomorrow to see if it’ll allow me to take it out of 4lo.

    Yes, it will.
You might be able to unplug the clutch switch and jump the connector.
Then get it out of 4WD. Remove the jumper, and fix the switch.

I’d try that before started unbolting actuators on the Transfer Case.

Before you do anything, push the clutch pedal all the way in.
    ALL THE WAY IN.

From how I understand it you need to be in 4 hi, stopped, gear shift in first gear, not sure about the parking brake or main brakes. The instructions on the visor provide no help if you have a manual transmission. For me it's trial and error till I get it but definitely need the gear shifter in first gear. Then to get out of 4 lo reverse process as mentioned above

Getting out of low range is a common problem with all 4X4 vehicles. After being driven for any distance in low range the gears can get bound up pretty tight and don't want to let go. 1st make sure you come to a complete stop, or nearly stopped. Under 2-3 mph. Press in clutch all the way or shift to neutral. Then move to 4hi. If it doesn't shift out of low range move the switch back to 4 low and back up 15-20', and try again. Backing up while in low range will often release the pressure on the gears. If the 2nd try doesn't work repeat the process. I've had to do this little dance 3-4 times in the past to get out of low range.

BTW this happens most often when using 4X4 in high traction situations.

I got the truck out of 4lo this morning I think it’s due to clutch switch and also the fact that 4lo probably wasn’t used much by the previous owner. There isn’t much need for 4lo if you only drive the truck to work.

I’ve only used 4LO once in the 11 years I’ve had my truck.
I will occasionally put it in Lo just to keep it “working”. But I never use it.

Lucky for me my driveway is nasty in the winter so both tacos will be using 4lo off and on.

Yes, this^^^^If you don't have that clutch mashed to the floor, engaging that switch, it won't shift into or out of 4LO. In my 2014, it doesn't care which gear it's in because the truck doesn't know. You just have to be stopped and you have to have that clutch on the floor. I'd start with that switch, don't go ripping into a bunch of other crap until you've ruled that out.
I have some selective OCD, EVERYTHING on my vehicles must work as intended, I can't even stand a TPMS light on, on my dash.

Basics. Tires, painted headlighes, UHLM, baby winch in the bed, and heated mirrors :)
Yep, like others said, it's just a faulty switch. Intermittent starting problems is the dead giveaway. The switch isn't telling the ECU the clutch is all the way down, so the e-nannies won't let it shift into/out of low-range. Nothing else seems to be mechanically or electrically wrong from what you describe. A few bucks and 10 minutes of your time will have it good as new.

You COULD bypass it, but you'd have to be careful because that would defeat the safeties. I.e. accidentally starting while in gear. And mashing it between hi/lo range while moving is bad news too.
